Title: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (Gloss Coat ...)
Post by: Spencer on September 02, 2013, 11:50:47 pm
New Build Everyone! The 1/1000 D7 built up as the Romulan capitol ship!

This will mainly be my experimentation with paints, weathering and clear coats. I realize that Round 2 has an updated Romulan D7 out there and I'll build that one (and a proper Kilingon one) at some point, hopefully lit.

I'm going to try to be very thorough with this thread ... here we go!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4389/37236838512_f1d388625c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YJuwM7)

First, I was happy when I saw the labeling on the inside of the kit ...
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4436/37265630171_8afa6eb986_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YM36x2)

But I rejoiced too soon ... crap!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4396/37010159370_c57d361ae5_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YosJY3)

This model claims to be a snap together, but it definitely is not! A lot of pieces sorta "slide" in place, relying on friction fitting. Parts would be falling off quite a bit if you just "snapped" it together! Example here:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4512/37218838596_8c2851b180_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YGUh2J)

I really like the idea of chrome plating, but there are a couple places were you simply can't hide where the piece has come off the sprue:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4388/37408094445_93d4a707f9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YZCgcB)

I might very well repaint these another shiny color at the appropriate time ...

The nacelle pylons don't fit all that well. There are no pegs where I really want them to be!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4488/37236746392_797326c7bb_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YJu4oQ)

There is also a good bit of excess plastic on the parts (flash and what have you):
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4404/37236777482_bde6c96cfc_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YJudCS)

But even with all this, it still looks nice when built up!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4373/37218761646_10ef036175_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YGTTa1)
Man! I gotta trim my fingernails!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4514/37236728862_40259e7db3_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YJtYbA)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4439/36596197483_e8923f1b32_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XKT5w8)

Hope you don't like that stand there buddy, cause that's the last time you're gonna be on it!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4392/37218720326_f31ffaaabb_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YGTESA)

I will keep the symbol though. Off to order some brass rod for a proper stand!

Pitiful Humans, behold your Minty-Fresh Adversary!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4417/37265508021_db4f5a6f3b_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YM2tdZ)

I like the color scheme recommended in the instructions, but I'm thinking about whipping something up of my own. I need to do a little research. Hope to have something by this coming weekend.

Until then,
Cheers!

These do build up to be good looking models. A bit of gap filling is called for but nothing to difficult.

It is a nice little kit

Waiting to see what color you use!

Good work so far!!

Well now ...

I just couldn't quite remember where the decal patterns came from for the Romulan version. It was at the tip of my tongue ...

Turns out, it's from the animated series (groan!).

I'll definitely be going with my own color scheme (although I might use a couple suggestions).

Also thinking about making my own decals to supplement and further highlight the whole "Bird of Prey" aspect. After all, I personally consider TAS NOT canon. Well ... most of it!

Cheers

One other thing of note about the decals I noticed this morning.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4443/37263062621_1a0e49038e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YLNWhV)

If you want a capitol ship, you put the decal with multiple feathers (higher rank I assume) ON TOP of the original "wing decal" (16A+16, 17A+17). Stacking decals. Besides putting registries on top of aztec decals, that's a new one on me.

Working on a preliminary color scheme for this thing. Going the greenish route. When I think Romulans, I think green!

Totally forgot I had some responses! Ah .. work days ...

@Kenny. Thanks! One of my favorite ship designs. Can be very "In Your Face!" ...

@Wil. Yep, par for the course.

Had a chance to work on the color scheme a bit ... There are some differences between the kit and these plans, but you'll get the general idea.

Still very much a work in progress ... and could very well change completely before I make up my mind! First time I've tried to do something like this ...

Still planning on making some custom decals (the bottom of the hull needs something to break it up), just haven't figure out what I want yet!

Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (COLORS)
Post by: Spencer on September 04, 2013, 02:38:56 pm
I think I've chosen the color scheme for this build. Had some time during the day to revamp the colors a bit. Took some inspiration from Sam's BOP build and figured I'd learn a bit about color theory. I'm going with a main base color which is then modified for certain areas of the hull.

The base color is a combination of cyan and green, so green-blue-green (At least that's what GIMP's color wheel tells me!). All other greens are then a toned combination of the base with black and white to get the desired color.

The yellow and orange colors I pulled right off the decal sheet to match the decals. I'm thinking that the chrome areas might get coated with silver and then maybe a clear green.

Still thinking about decals ...  :-\

P.S. Anybody know where I could get some green primer, if such a thing even exists???

I picked up some Duplicolor green primer from Pep Boys.

It is in my video on youtube called Clear Coats and Primers!

It screams Klingon green!!!

Hmm ... I think it's needs a little more blue - bluegrayish to it ...

Patience ... I'm still new at this ...

Post by: Spencer on September 04, 2013, 07:02:57 pm
How about something like this??? I think it swings toward Romulan and away from Klingon ... Not as bright and intense and a little more blue ...

Strange ... the shout outs for the Klingon version are all grays, while this version is all greens  ???  Guess it make some sense if you're going by the studio model ...

The hues and tints are now creeping (unintentionally) toward the recommended colors. Here's one of the darker hull colors, Fulcrum Gray/Green ...

I've been toying with buying this kit for some time now but I think its safe to say I'm sold and will be getting one.

It's another really nice 1/1000 kit dirk! Simple to do ... and can be built up to look very nice if you put the work into it. I'm now beginning to suspect that even the color shout outs are a really good choice too.

To all: After some more thinking about the colors and doing a little more digging, my plan right now is to go with the suggested colors, but modify them as I see fit. That way, I'll have about the right hue, but can lighten/darken the colors to what I like ... I'll also see about maybe picking out some other colors for accent areas.

I plan to do pre-shading, weathering with pastels and maybe a wash on this kit ...

Cheers

Thanks Kenny!
Took a look at your video. Very Informative!

I actually have a can of Krylon Matte finish, used that on my TOS-E stand, along with the Duplicolor adhesion promoter.

I plan on trying out various dull/satin coats with this build ... I'll also give the gray and green primers you talked about a try if my Advance carries it ...
Been using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor mostly. Works nice but you gotta sand it a little ... at least I had to.

Dirk, and Spencer really, I've built one of these and they look really good. I didn't like the look of the ship itself before building it but a friend sent it to me and after building it, I really like the design. I've even gotten myself a second one to do at some stage.

Spencer, the colour choice looks really good. Ultimately, go with what you want as its your model  ;D My Klingon version was painted one shade of grey with no highlights and I still like it.

@Wil.
Oh I agree! I plan on doing this one, a proper Klingon D7 and the updated Romulan version that came out not too long ago.
I like the color suggestions, but it seemed a little to monotone for me. I think the highlights will look nice.

Also searching out on them there internets for ideas on decals to compliment the ones I have right now ... Want to learn how to make custom decals and I figured this would be a good time to start!

I now have a VERY rough idea on what kind of custom decals I want on the lower hull. Will get some measurements later and work on a proper graphic ... See if you can guess where the inspiration came from!!

Update Time!

I finally have a graphic for the custom wing decals that go on the underside of the main hull. Changed it to keep it similar to the kit decals. It was made in GIMP.

Resized here to show, the lines are pretty sharp in the actual graphic ...
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4391/36586280284_f39bfb7c6b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XK1ftW)

Printed them out to make sure my measurements were correct and they seem to be ... Already have some liquid decal film, so all I need now is some decal paper ... off to get that!

Didn't print in color (printer's nearly dry). I think it looks nice ...

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4341/37009970740_236677db05.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YorLTN)

Also got some brass rod, a couple pieces of balsa and a wooden plaque from Michaels for the base.

Thinking about putting this on the plaque ...
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4404/37438757455_bf995011d0.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Z3kqfc)

Will probably make a stencil of some kind to do it ... Would be even more awesome if this were backlit somehow, hmm ...

Cheers

Thanks Tony!

Update ...

Got the base constructed. I bought a little plaque from Michaels, pine I believe, and broke out the borrowed dremel press. Put a 1/8" hole not quite all the way through the center. Then a similar hole in a small piece of balsa that will be glued inside the model. The balance of the model seemed good at one of the holes where the original stand attaches, so I widened that to 1/8". I'll fill in the other hole later ... Got some 1/8" brass rod from my local ACE (They have a very limited selection all the way in the back ...).

I was afraid that if I just put the balsa flush with the inner model surface that it would slant down toward the front, but it looks just right as is, so I'm keeping it that way. First time doing this but I think it looks pretty good!

Never mind the huge fitting gaps!!! Was just putting it back together roughly to get the overall look!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4487/37218622936_ce96842369.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YGTaVs)

I'm off to order some paint!!

These are custom design decals, right?
Just wondering if I am missing something!!
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP ...)
Post by: Spencer on September 07, 2013, 02:27:45 pm
Yes Kenny, the wing graphics are my own custom design, but the full BOP is just a blowup from the decal sheet. I originally wanted to put the new wings on the underside of the hull since there's virtually nothing to go there, but now, I'm also liking how they sit on the upper areas as well. I may replace the kit decals there, but that would be it ... just trying to learn how to make custom decals ...

That color wheel has gotten some use, particularly in trying to figure out shades and such for this kit. I found online tutorials to be quite useful in helping me understand how to use it! Maybe someday i can pick paint by eye, but certainly not right now!!

Here is my planned graphic for the base. The colors should be easy to mix if I stencil it, just the same orange color mixed with a little black or yellow here and there. I could maybe do a nice printout on photo-paper sandwiched between two pieces of plexiglass, or maybe printed onto some transparency ... not sure yet. Anyone know Romulan? I think it looks cool but I have no idea what it says!  ;D

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4373/37040558670_edf8d26413.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Yr9xBU)

And on the base. My apologies for the bad color printout, printer's nearly out of blue/cyan ...

The base looks perfect Spencer and the winged templates you have fit it nicely.

This build really embodies the Klingon/Romulan exchange of technologies that was evident in The Enterprise Incident.

Appreciate it Tony ...
I was never expecting to get this involved at the 1/1000 scale, but the potential of these kits really gets the brain working.
Ah, The Enterprise Incident ... Dun Dun Dun DUN! Dun Dun Dun DUN!  ;) ;D

Hopefully by next weekend my paints will show up and I can get to work in earnest. Gonna try out some FolkArt black acrylic for the pre-shading. Water based but it's gonna have to get thinned A LOT ... Will also be trying the duplicolor filler primer.

Thanks guys!!  :)

Just trying to do something a little different for this kit. The details on it go by the Animated Series, which I'm not a fan of ... so I am applying my own custom touch.
The full BOP image is just a teeny little decal that sits under the main hull and I thought "really?". I know the updated kit has the full BOP underneathe so I didn't want to replicate that, thus I'm going with the bigger wings above and below, but I wanted that big bird to fly ( ;)) so I put it on the base.

I'll probably do a nice printout and sandwich the graphic between two thin sheets of plexiglass ...

No updates of any substance right now, waiting mainly on supplies ...

Cheers

Post by: Spencer on September 08, 2013, 03:28:27 pm
Finalized my paint scheme. Will be ordering my paints very soon ... I may have to thin the lines on my wing decals a bit ... no biggie.

Here is the scheme as is, besides the orange, yellow and clear green, the other colors are mixtures of two different bases: Fulcrum Gray/Green and Interior Blue/Green. All paints are either Model Master Enamel or Acryl ...

Discovered art-paints.com (http://www.art-paints.com/). Very handy. They have most, if not all model paint colors, and the proper color codes for photoshop programs, although you have to take it with a grain of salt. Color can be tricky on electronic displays, but it can give you the rough idea ...

While I've never been crazy about this color pallet (I just never thought it was interesting) I do think you've done a great job revamping its look, Spencer. You've certainly given the design character, which it sorely lacked. You definitely gave us a better build than what they showed in the series. This new look has me rethinking the paint job on my TOS BOP!

I hope it turns out as good as it looks here ... Go too green and you go Klingon, go too pale and you go "meh ..."
You can never really tell until you actually have some paint down ... We'll see.

It's nice to know I'm providing some inspiration somewhere!

An unrelated thing ...

I just got the updated Romulan D7 and ... oh man!! The patterns look pretty sweet!!

The suggested color is also kinda bad-a$$. A dark, anthracite kind of metallic.

ANYWAY ... Don't worry, I'm still building the capitol ship as is!! The new D7 will get built on the side as I work on larger kits in the future!!

Aside from the decal sheet and chrome pieces is there any difference between the Romulan D7 and the Klingon D7? These should be virtually the same right? Also, can you link where you got the update Romulan D7?
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (Paint Scheme ...)
Post by: Spencer on September 09, 2013, 07:59:08 pm
Well DJ,

From what I can tell the differences are ...

- The plastic is a dark gray color, to sort of match the suggested colors in the event you don't want to paint ... The Klingon is a mint green.

- The two little lights at the bridge section are clear green as opposed to clear red.

- The stand is different also. It has the Round 2 dome base, but instead of a support rod, a curved wire swings around and connects to the back end of the model so that it doesn't interfere with the big BOP decal.

I got mine from Culttvman. He has a picture of it built up too ...

How do you plan to print the decals?
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (Paint Scheme ...)
Post by: Spencer on September 09, 2013, 08:33:32 pm
@Tankton

This version I believe was produced to mimic the remastered version of The Enterprise Incident. Like this ...

The original footage, if I recall correctly, was just footage of the Klingon D7. I think the Klingon version is supposed to be primarily gray, similar to yours. You could even see the Klingon emblem if you look close enough ...

Point being ... I don't think there is a consistent color for the Romulan version, but the Klingon version should be grayish ... Didn't AMT actually built the studio model? if so, then whatever colors they suggest should be right.

Don't mean to be "rivet counting" here, just letting you know what I found in some of my research ...

@Mark

I was planning on buying some decal paper and using liquid decal film from Microscale Industries to coat them. Do you have any suggestions? It'll still be a while before I get to that stage.

I just tried to match the color on the box but with a darker more menacing look.
The kit comes molded in green.

Yep!

In other news ...

I finally got my paints ordered.

Taking some advice from crowe-t and MarkW, I'm going to try using Future as a gloss coat and for the decals.

I then plan on using MM Flat Acryl Clear mixed with a touch of the semi-gloss as a dull coat. At least that's the plan or now ...

Last update for a few days ... another crunch week at work ...

A test print of the BOP at max resolution on some photo-paper. Looks pretty good! Will try to get a transparency at work and see what i can do with that.

Taken with my smartphone. My camera is misbehaving ... The image is about 4 inches across ...

On decals, the one issue you'll have is a white background, or lack of one.  On Enterprise kits the base color is light enough to use clear decal film and get away with it.  With a darker gray or green base, you'll have to use white decal film or end up with muddy, see through decals.

Not sure if you had considered that yet, or had designed your decals so trimming the visible white paper off would be less a hassle.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (Paint Scheme ...)
Post by: Spencer on September 10, 2013, 07:17:16 am
I had thought about that a little Mark.

I think the design is simple enough to where I should be able to trim it off the white paper without much problem.

I had a chance tonight to print out the BOP on some transparency.

It looks okay ... I have a moderately priced HP printer which claims it can make decent transparency prints and had the printer set to print transparency. I think it's just the nature of the beast on this one. It still looks nice when laid onto my cutting board which should about the same as the base after I put some "natural" color stain on it.

Don't think my paints will get here before the weekend ... Grrr!!

Again taken with my Iphone, so apologies ...

Short Update ...

Stained the base. Chose a subtle, "natural" color. Don't want to go dark.

Managed to get some transparency meant for inkjet printers. That wasn't easy, but i got some. The BOP looks ten times better now!!

Also got a sheet of clear acrylic to go over the transparency to give the BOP an embedded look.

A teaser of what it's going to look like! Happy camper here!
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4441/37296616571_48065695d2.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YPLUHi)

I plan to drill 4 holes at the corners an cut some brass pegs from my leftover brass rod. That'll hold everything in place and the look of the pegs should help compliment the look of the support rod a bit ...

The base should be done soon, then I'll move on to priming and some assembly on the model ...

And I finally got to open my package from Amazon today, WOOO!!!
UPDATE: Supposed to be the Amazon Blu-ray phaser set ... but can't find the old photo ... oh well ...

Sweet Spencer on the base and the phaser. Man I wish I got one of those.

That base looks awesome...btw...have you seen the paint schemes on Romulan Stormbirds?

I remember a company called Fasa that made small pewter ships for Star Fleet Battles I think...anyway this is what it looks like.

The Stormbird looks cool, like a Romulan K'tinga. Saw a couple people online who had made some custom decals to replicate the look.

@Wil
That is the Into Darkness phaser. It's nice.

True that.
It surprised the heck outta me the first time I was asked advise on my DS9 build. I never have, and never will, consider myself that good of a modeler and yet I'm able to share what I've learnt from my many mistakes, and am happy to do so. I also think Boyd's site here plays a big part in people sharing. I've been to other sites where the comments made are just nasty sometimes, unhelpful most of the time.

Anyway, onto your stand. It looks wicked Spencer. Glad it all worked out for you and its certainly given my some ideas.

A quick update before bed. Finally working on assembly, but I can't do too much just yet without my paints because of the way I plan to airbrush the different colors on.

Anyway, got the two halves of the main hull together. A little filing to get rid of some "steps", a hit with some squadron, some sanding with 400 grit, Duplicolor adhesion promoter and primer.

Tried Duplicolor Filler Primer as per Kenny's suggestion on his youtube video. Oh man ... no kidding on how nice this stuff sprays! I also recommend trying it out if you can get it. MUCH better than my experiences with Krylon!!

Some more sanding and putty work to do in a few spots (obviously) ...

I was a Krylon man for years...then Kenny recommended Duplicolor sandable primer. It was like night and day.  It lays down extremely smooth.

Gonna have to try the filler next. Thanx for sharing that.

Are you guys spraying that straight from the can or thru the airbrush? I try to de-cant all my paint these days and since I've FINALLY found a stockist of Duplicolor I'm keen to give it a try.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP)
Post by: Spencer on September 16, 2013, 06:59:57 am
I'm spraying straight from the can. Just got the hang of using an airbrush, so I haven't tried to decant any paint for it yet.

Something I have on my "things to learn" list though.

What he said.  There really isn't any point in decanting the Duplicolor.  The newer cans with the rotatable square nozzle are just fine from the spray bomb, giving a much finer and "spit less" lay down than the older style spray can nozzles.  Both the regular and filler primer are top notch, and by the gallon substantially cheaper than Tamiya or other hobby can primers.

Yes, you can get Duplicolor in a tin, or spray down the Mr. Surfacer line of primers with an AB and get really nice results too, but for a starship model like these, Duplicolor is IMO perfect.  Takes all the guesswork out of priming.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP)
Post by: Spencer on September 16, 2013, 08:01:57 pm
Yep, I agree.

It's easy enough to spray and goes down so smooth that I wouldn't decant it.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP)
Post by: Kila2000 on September 17, 2013, 12:05:37 am
I wasn't really concerned by the finish from an airbrush but more the over spray when using a can. I don't have alot funds so making a can go further by decanting is what I'm all about  ;D Either way, I'm still gonna get me some.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP)
Post by: MarkW on September 17, 2013, 05:41:24 am
At automotive stores, a big can costs about $5.  If you do try to decant, let us know how it works out.  I'm not sure it would be worth the effort given transfer and cleaning loss.  I've used less than one can total on a 350 TOS E kit (with a LOT of work on the nacelle seam  ::) ).  Because of the rotating nozzle design, it shoots with more a rectangular than a conical spray, so you can orient the spray pattern to the length of the part and minimize overspray.

Ok, let's return to the regularly scheduled programming!

;D I see your $5 a can and raise you $20, thats NZ dollars so around $16 US. Aint nothin cheap down my end of the globe  ;D
I decant all my Tamiya primers and paints with no trouble.

16 bucks ...  :o

Anyway, last update till this weekend.

I've got everything assembled that I want before painting, now just waiting for my paints to get here. Hopefully soon ...

Assembled the neck and "bulb". Took a bit a finesse to get the two halves together without "steps". Working on surface imperfections now, which are few and far between.

One thing I mentioned earlier was to paint a few light layers of clear green over the chrome parts. I tried this out using some Future mixed with green food coloring. I've since stripped the Future (and forgot to take pictures!) but it looked really good, sort of a lit effect. I'll call it proof of concept and will do this with some very light coats clear green Acryl when the time comes.

Post by: MarkW on September 19, 2013, 04:50:16 am
Out of curiosity, have you tried it without the adhesion promoter?  I've never used the stuff and am wondering what it does.  It seems like you are adding a clear primer to add a gray primer.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (WIP)
Post by: Spencer on September 19, 2013, 02:00:48 pm
The promoter is supposed to help the paint adhere to the plastic better so that it's less likely you'll pull up paint if you do a lot of masking.

I did try spraying just the filler primer and then promoter + primer on some scrap material. Call me crazy, but it did look as if the primer went down a little smoother on top of the promoter. Could just be me though ...

Not sure ...  :-\ ... Everywhere I've seen the Duplicolor paints/primers, I've seen the promoter, but then again, Duplicolor's pretty common where I'm at.

I would see if the guy you found who stocks it has any. If not, ask if he could order some??

EDIT:
It's listed as  "CP199 - Adhesion Promotor Clear Primer" on the website.

I've been following this thread and been real curious myself.....I picked up a can of the duplicolor primer/filler yesterday at Advance Auto on the way home and saw the adhesion promoter sitting right next to it. I've been shelling out the bucks for the Tamiya primer for a long time (and love the stuff!) I hope this is as good as all you guys say it is.

By the way Spencer, looks awesome!

Never used Tamiya primer, so I can't really say which is better, only that the duplicolor was most certainly better than what I had been using (Krylon).

Also easier for me to get hold of since I have to order all my model paints online.

Well, while Testors scrambles about trying to find out what's happened to my paint order (swallowed by the aether I'm assuming), I thought I would give you guys a little update on something.

My Refit NX-01 arrived yesterday and my plan is to build both it and the pre-refit together after the D7. Both will hopefully be lit. Gonna get me some SMDs for that. Will probably just be static lighting. Also ordered a set of aztec decals for the pre-refit, they should be here soon. I'm going with the suggested paint scheme for the refit, which is (not surprisingly) very similar to the TOS Enterprise.

After that, it's the 1/1000 1701 Refit, and then onto bigger builds.

Since nearly all the colors are enamels, this will be rather slow going, but I think the end result will be worth it!

First round of colors now down ...

Looks pretty good so far, about what I envisioned. It looks rather plain right now, but when I get some more accent colors on it, that'll change.

I'm using Model Master Enamels, thinning with Testor's Universal Enamel Thinner: 3 parts paint, 1 part thinner. I have my compressor set to 20 psi and am spraying about 4 inches from the surface.

Thanks for looking,
Cheers

Another update everyone.

Going more slowly than I want (life, work, etc.).

Got the second round of colors down. A few lines here and there that'll need sanding. Really happy with how it's turning out!
Some differences are subtle, some aren't.

Not to nitpick, but I assume you are letting those seams on the Nacelles stay the way the are?

This is looking great. And I don't think the seams will be noticeable
once you get it assembled. Especially at this scale.

Nope, the seams will be dealt with, just getting the bulk of the color down now. Final seam work and touch ups will come later.

P.S. Still have to attach the pylons to the main hull. Some serious gap work that's gotta be done there.

A little hard to see in the pics, but most of those seams are "excess". I'm sure that with a little sanding and touch up, those spots will all but disappear.

Yeah, the problem with these TOS ships, be it the Ent or a Warbird, is they are basically nothing but curves with nada surface detail.  Any gaps or flats really stick out like a sore thumb.  I've been living the dream on the 350 TOS E, where you have miles of surface area that has nothing better to do than embarrass you.

The color scheme so far looks really interesting!

I plan to attach the pylons to the main hull near the end of painting, masking off everything when it comes time to do the putty/sanding work.

HOPEFULLY more soon!

Hopefully this weekend I'll get some more color down on the D7 and start attaching the pylons.
Title: Re: 1/1000 D7 Romulan Capitol Ship (Dusting Off The Thread...)
Post by: Spencer on November 20, 2015, 09:15:18 pm
Well hello again everybody,

Been a while ... over two years now! Graduate school (and a dozen other things) got in the way, but now that's passed.

I'm on the job hunt right now, but I've finally managed to get enough other things done to where I have a few hours a week to get back
to building. So ... it's time to dust off this thread (and the model) and get back to it!

So here is where things are at with the D7 (no pictures this time):
---------------------

After taking a long look over the model to remember what I was doing, I decided to strip the paint and re-prime everything. There were
just too many surface imperfections and visible seams for my taste, plus I'll need to whip up a new batch of colors.

Also, I'll probably attach the pylons to the main hull before I start painting again. That's going to need a fair amount of work and I'd rather
paint after that's done. For now, that's all I got.

--------------------

On another note, I'll also be working on my dual 1:1000 NX-01 build as well (I'll resurrect that thread later)

Plus I need to peruse through the forum and get caught up on what's been going on the past several months.

Spencer

The main surfaces have been re-primed. Still using Duplicolor filler primer.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4457/36627179513_db5094bb16.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XNBSp4)

There's a couple surface imperfections to deal with, then I'll get to work on getting the pylons attached.
Definitely some work there to be done.

Post by: Spencer on November 22, 2015, 07:37:00 pm
I've attached the pylons to the main hull.

Used red tube cement so that it would act as part of the filler. A little sanding, squadron putty, sanding, priming and more sanding
gets me to this.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4463/36587023924_64bb080d2b_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XK54xj)
Still more work to do, but I'm over the hump ...

Turns out that a good bit of my old colors are still salvageable so I won't have to mix up a whole new batch.

Hey everyone!

Dusting off this thread ... again!

I'm back to work on the 1:1000 Romulan D7 Capitol Ship. As a reminder, this is the version as seen in Star Trek: The Animated Series, with some subtle color changes of my own.

First, I had planned on making some custom decals for this kit, but I'm currently without an inkjet printer, so I'll probably just go with the supplied markers.

Second, my paint scheme will change slightly, but will still be very similar to the ones in previous posts. I just got some new paint in the mail.
I wasn't aware, but *apparently* (Rustoleum) Testors has discontinued their International Military and Figure Enamels, which included some of my colors (other forum link below).
But, I should have enough for what I need.

http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/299198-testors-products-being-discontinued/&tab=comments#comment-2865400

After taking a close look at the build where I left off, I noticed some surface imperfections where the main hull meets the pylons. The imperfections seem to line up with the insert tabs
used to put the pieces together. I suspect the plastic cement may have weakened the plastic enough to cause the bumps and depressions. I don't recall noticing it before I stopped
working on the model. Anyway, I've done some more puttying and sanding and should have it dealt with. I'll lay down some primer whenever it isn't so rainy here ...

Primer is down and all the major sub-assemblies look good. Looks like the surface imperfections have been dealt with.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4506/37551445636_60a6da89d1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZdhYvS)

My thinner got tied up in the mail, but should be here in a couple days.
Gives me some time to think of a strategy for painting, since each color of enamel I spray will take a couple days to fully cure ...

Cheers,
Spencer

While I wait for the rest of my paint to show up ... I've decided on a slightly different color scheme.
Note that the colors shown here might not be indicative of the final result, but should be similar.

My plan for (what were) the chrome parts is to spay a layer of silver or silver chrome, then very light coats of future mixed with some green food coloring.
This will probably be one of the last steps (after a dull coat) since I want to keep them glossy.

First colors brushed down, at least on some detail parts. Will probably spray another coat of yellow when the enamel cures.

Will hopefully have some main hull color down early in the week.

BTW, my plan on this kit is to put the colors down, let them cure, then spray several misting coats of Future to get that "wet" look.
Then, apply the decals, hit them with another couple coats of Future and finish off with some kind of dull clear.
This will be my first time spraying Future and I plan to spray it straight through the brush.

If you guys have any ideas for a nice dull coat that can be sprayed over Future, then let me know ...

NOTE: color may be a bit off because of the orange

Spencer

Thanks Mark!

First hull color is now down! Had some time this morning to mix my colors and spray over lunch. Been chomping at the bit ...

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4508/23906916508_28b0df9b27_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/CqzcnE)

I'm not overly concerned about overspray here, I just don't want to get too much paint into those grill pieces. Turns out 1/8" wide vinyl tape
is just about perfect for the nacelle grills.

For those playing along at home:
I'm using Model Masters enamels. Specifically here, 30% Fulcrum Grey/Green and 70% White.
I'm thinning the paint using Testors Universal Enamel Thinner (in the red can) and spraying at 22psi, holding the brush about 3-4 inches from the surface.

If you can't see the color well in the image below, that's actually good. I'm spraying the lightest colors so it will be easier to cover up any overspray
with my darker colors.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4507/37501475750_494131127a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Z8SSd7)

The color in this shot is a bit less subtle
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4488/37727858332_4ba56b73ae_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZtT8S5)

I'm a bit rusty with the airbrush, but am quickly getting back into it. Just a couple spots to clean up, but nothing I can't handle.

Now I play the waiting game, at least 2-3 days for this to fully cure before I move on to the next color.

Cheers,
Spencer

Thanks!

I finally got the triangular side-panel pieces to lay a little more flat. The Klingon version of these pieces are grills, and both variants are supposed to be recessed. Neither
does so very well. In fact, I've never been happy with the fit of these pieces. But, it's definitely better now.

Will probably use Tamiya liquid cement (and definitely pressure) to make sure they go in place and stay that way. Will probably have to touch up the color a bit as well.

I'll also be testing various dull coats to go over the Future gloss coat. I have some Krylon Matte Finish and Model Master Acryl Flat Clear to test, and maybe some more by tomorrow evening.
I have an old 1:350 TOS saucer with the panel lines I'll be using for tests.

Back again. This time spraying on the second hull color. This goes on the underside of the main hull and a couple other places.
Correction to post: 50% Flat White + 50% Fulcrum Grey/Green.

Sorry for the lower photo quality, my camera battery started to die on me while I was taking these ...

The color is only slightly darker than the first but noticeable, which is what I'm going for. The camera really doesn't pick up on it very well.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4503/37786409736_f1e80b0a1f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Zz4ea3)

Airbrushing is all coming back to me, no problems spraying using the same setup as before. There were a couple very subtle surface features, and the
masking line against the starboard nacelle didn't match up precisely, so I put a small amount of color on a firm brush and lightly did some touch up.
These classic ships are pretty unforgiving with their mainly smooth surfaces, but that's part of what makes them so timeless IMO.
I'll go over everything with some fine grit paper when the enamel fully cures. Another 2-3+ days I wait ...

On another note, I have various dull coats and matte finishes (and a couple more on the way) to test over Future and see what works for me. I'll practice
spraying Future a bit and then try them out. I'll put my results in another thread, not sure which forum topic it'll be yet.

Cheers,
Spencer

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone build the D-7 from TAS. This is a different spin on the Klingons! Gene L. Coon would be honored!

Will you be painting the hull the blue color as well?

Thanks guys!  :)

Somewhere, WAY back in this thread, someone else mentioned this as the Stormbird. I have a couple of the "updated" kits which have the big BOP pattern underneath:
http://www.culttvmanshop.com/Romulan-Battlecruiser-11000-from-Polar-Lights_p_2473.html

Will build one of those at some point. Always a fan of the big orange bird.

At the time I bought this kit, the only place you saw the Stormbird was in TAS since the model used in "The Enterprise Incident" was actually the Klingon version. The Romulan
colors were so inconsistent between episodes (sometimes blue, sometimes grey and even a little green) I was left wondering what colors to try.
(http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/tas-d7-romulan-thesurvivor.jpg) (http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/tas-d7-romulan-thesurvivor.jpg)

In the end I decided on something similar to the shoutouts in the instructions, which is various tints of Fulcrum Grey/Green:
http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Enamel/Model-Master/International-Military/USSR-Fulcrum-Gray-Green/USSR-Fulcrum-Gray-Green.html

And do some highlights with the oranges, yellows and tones of Interior Blue/Green, mainly to break up the monotony:

Another update. The last main hull color has been sprayed. This is the upper half of the main hull and most of the "top hat".
100% Fulcrum Grey/Green thinned and sprayed as before.

Not the easiest things to mask, but it all turned out quite nice. Just a couple spots to touch up on the corners.

Next up will be the detail colors. Most of those will be masked, but hand painted instead of sprayed. Then there will be a short break while I practice
spraying Future and test out some dull coats.

And another 2-3 days I wait ...

Cheers,
Spencer

A short update. I'm under the weather and it will be a couple days before I do any more.

I've painted some of the detail on the "top hat"

To mask, I applied some Tamiya tape and used a toothpick to trace out the edges. After cutting the edge using a fresh blade,
I carefully peeled away the tape.

Don't mind the lint, it's from the paper towel ...

I'll be sure to spray some on the big dome before I spray on the orange ...

I hate yellow I think its one of the hardest colors to paint, white undercoat is usually a good idea.

I am actually building the Romulan Battle Cruiser version of the D-7 now, and I have no idea what polar lights did to this kit maybe the molds are getting old or maybe the plastic is different but nothing fits and theres tons of flash. I have built the older versions of this kit and don't remember it being such a pain to work with.

I have built the older versions of this kit and don't remember it being such a pain to work with.

 yours is looking good  8)

Thanks RockyD. The fit on this kit wasn't great either. Had to do a bunch of work where the nacelles attach to
the main hull and there was more flash than I was expecting when i opened it up. The 1/1000 Enterprise I built
before this definitely went together better. Definitely not a snap kit IMO.

Feeling a little better today. Put another coat of yellow on, looks pretty good I think.
Did some other touch ups on the main hull, but hopefully will get more accents on later in the week.

Practicing with Future and clear coats now. Hope to have something chosen in time for the top coat.

Thanks Steve,

I'm one of those "slow and steady wins the race" kind of folks.
Although it has taken two hiatuses over 4 years to get back to some progress, LOL.

Spencer, as you may have seen by my Protector build, I am a slow builder, too. So I understand the characteristic. While I am not "four years hiatus while defending my PhD" kind of slow, I am slower than most! ;D

Still, this Battle Cruiser is looking good and that you came back to the bench is highly commendable!

Stay the course and steady as she goes!

And I plan to stay back as well! I'll be looking for a new job come Spring/Summer, but regardless of where I end up, I'll be building.

Anyway, waiting on a replacement airbrush tip. >:(  None of the other accents I think would look all that great hand painted.
Making progress on getting my test surface(s) sprayed with Future. Also gives me some time to play around with circuit ideas
for future builds.

That's about it for now.

Another small update,

My replacement airbrush tip arrived in the mail, so what better way to test it out than the most difficult detail to mask, spray and touch-up!  ::)

I didn't take pictures of the masking, was too focused ...

I thinned some flat white and international orange a little more than normal and sprayed at a lower pressure, ~ 17 PSI, to limit overspray and
paint buildup. After spraying a couple thin coats of white and letting it dry for a few minutes, I then sprayed the orange. A little overspray
and paint bleed, but still looks nice and is to be expected for these kind of shapes.

Will do some touch ups later and spray more accents on the other sub-assemblies.

Spencer

More accents down.

This time, some Interior Blue/Green on the neck supports and the parts that hold the upper flux chillers.
Really pleased how the masking turned out this time.

The ribbed pieces on the neck will get 50/50 Interior Blue/Green and Neutral Gray. They'll be painted in one block. I won't try to mask
in between them, there isn't really a gap there that I can see.

Again I wait ...

I am really digging on your colors something totally different then we usually see.

TAS is on Netflix and I watched a couple episodes last night. wow did that bring back memories, when I was a kid we didn't have a color TV, but I used to walk to my grandparents every sat morning to watch cartoons and eat breakfast

Thanks! I'm too young to have seen TAS on air, but watched a dvd marathon with my roommate. Okay, I'll admit, I tolerated it ...  ;D

Another update ... apologies for some blurry photos. My camera's battery needs recharging.

The bridge dome was sprayed Interior Blue/Green. The stripe on the underside I will (attempt) to paint orange later.
It's glossy because I thinned the enamel more than usual, and used lower pressure, to avoid runs and drips.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4558/38213527766_b2bf40b6a0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21dNjt1)

I masked around the recessed detail on the nacelles and sprayed the darker shade of Blue/Green, which is only a subtly different
shade than the main hull color. Not easy to see in the photo. Burnishing the edges of the tape and low pressure are key here.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4549/37557492374_d2754c33a7_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZdPXZY)

I had some Testors pin striping tape to mask the area in between. Not cheap, but it did the job.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4531/38268370921_f83af6eee6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21iDpqD)

Here's the kind of look I'm going for on the front.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4515/26491896339_ec59176d45_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GmZTPr)

And most of the model dry fit. I also sprayed the top and back of the impulse assembly the darker Blue/Green color.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4531/38268326561_597152ff84_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21iDbeP)

A couple more accents to put down, then the Future. It's all coming together!

Spencer

I'm envious of your masking and painting skills! Very well done!

Apologies if I missed it but, are you gonna light this thing, too?  That would be cool!

Keep going!

Sadly, not this particular kit.
But most kits hereafter will be lighted. I also have a couple 1/1000 NX-01s I've set aside as side projects that will be lit.
Will be working on those as time permits ...

I'm actually spending most of my time with my folks for the next few days and getting my workspace reorganized, but I should probably give
a small update.

After testing various flat clears over Future. I've pretty much decided to go with either Krylon UV-Resistant Matte Clear or Krylon Matte Finish for this
build. I have a couple more kinds of clear to test, but don't expect things to change.

I've also painted the impulse chiller grills Model Master Chrome Silver. My plan is to spray Future mixed with green food coloring over that to give it a kind of
colored metallic look.

Hopefully some more pics later in the week.

Cheers,
Spencer

Hello again everyone!

Another update.

Besides places where the green metal is supposed to be, painting is now DONE!

I masked off the back of the nacelles and sprayed Interior Blue/Green and then hand painted the end details the
darker shade of the same color.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4570/24631314498_e7cdc8c4a2_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/DwzVEb)

You can also see where I painted Testors Chrome Silver Enamel on the upper chiller grills. Turned out nice. Let's hope
green colored Future over it looks even nicer. Those pieces will be my testbed, if it doesn't pan out, I'll strip them and paint all
the metallic areas just chrome silver.

I also painted the ribbed detail on the neck the darker color. Those were masked then painted by hand.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4542/24631320398_97da622f86_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/DwzXpU)

The lip underneath the bridge dome had to be painted twice. First some white then orange. Masking would have been a
pain so I just freehanded it. The nice thing about a gloss coat underneath is you can rub off wiggles in the paint line with a
wet toothpick. Not perfect but good enough since it will be a little tough to see anyway.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4540/37617656715_fc18fec13e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Zj9jLc)

By mid-week I should be able to put some Future over everything.

I'll be so happy ...

Will be a big relief to have a protective coat. Getting to the point of diminishing returns here.

Hopefully next weekend will be the decals!

Cheers,
Spencer

Looking great.

Thanks!

Some more assembly.

I glued in the triangular intakes. Fit still isn't great, even with my whittling. But, you work with what you got.
Also snapped on the detail pieces underneath the nacelles and put the bridge dome in place. Pretty tight
squeeze there, but it's in.

Spencer, you're making me want to build one of these!

Steve

Thanks man ...

Aside from its issues, it's really a nice little kit to build. I have three more in the stash.  ;D
I, of course  ::), am making the paint job a bit more difficult than it needs to be by going for that animated look.

My only hope is that the decals hold up. They're almost 10 years old (the paper says 2008), but look to be in good shape.
If they don't hold up for some reason, then I'll be trying decal bonder spray or liquid decal film for the first time.
If that doesn't work then there is always the Bird of Payne set I can get.

And I'm STILL geeking out about the paint job!

LOL!

I might take some time away from all the Turkey day family madness to put some Future on the subassemblies.

All Futured up!
But don't look too close  ;). A small amount of dust here and there, but that's the game you play.

Sprayed at 18 PSI a few to several inches from the surface in light coats.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4580/24739304058_1d551f6b1c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/DG8pc9)

When I was done, I saw my airbrush needle was slightly bent ... but it sprayed fine. A couple runs of the needle over some
600 grit paper and it was right again.

Will give the gloss until Monday to fully dry and cure before I work on decals, just to be safe ... I believe the end is in sight!

Cheers,
Spencer
