It has begun! Ok, guys, first pics. I spent the last couple of days alternating between continuing decal placement on my Enterprise D and dry fitting parts on my Falcon, as well as giving some thought as to the order of assembly I would follow. I tend to favor primering and painting the large parts first, so with that in mind, I went ahead and washed the two saucer halves with dish washing detergent, then let them dry, and then began with the light blocking inside. Now, this kit's plastic is thick, so I dont believe I'll need very heavy light blocking. First, a coat of the black primer.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/016E7960-084B-4B24-929F-F010E24C186D_zpsyxvilgcw.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/016E7960-084B-4B24-929F-F010E24C186D_zpsyxvilgcw.jpg.html)

Then a coat of the white primer for light reflection within.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/DEF30A90-9380-4F53-B6C0-6C8A5753F30F_zpsfz3r0a9i.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/DEF30A90-9380-4F53-B6C0-6C8A5753F30F_zpsfz3r0a9i.jpg.html)

Then I mulled over the choice of base hull color. I pored over several different reference photos, especially the ones provided with the kit which are wonderful, as well as read some forum posts in assorted blogs, and decided that, to my eye, the base color is a sort of khaki/tan/light grey combination. With this in mind, I went ahead and mixed up my witches brew using the Spies Hecker paints.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/3A50AC82-FA28-4D3F-831A-F18A82FC9C21_zps4r6if1o5.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/3A50AC82-FA28-4D3F-831A-F18A82FC9C21_zps4r6if1o5.jpg.html)

I started with white as my base, filling the little cup up to the little cardboard edge at the bottom, then I added a total of 4 drops of black and 4 drops of yellow. The resulting color is a very close match.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/58F5FA72-EA2C-4BC7-B813-7D95E172FD38_zpsrqbeu5f1.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/58F5FA72-EA2C-4BC7-B813-7D95E172FD38_zpsrqbeu5f1.jpg.html)

So went ahead and primered with gray Transtar primer first

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/10A169BD-FDA6-495A-A1D2-D09A3E83405E_zpsj1bnjznz.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/10A169BD-FDA6-495A-A1D2-D09A3E83405E_zpsj1bnjznz.jpg.html)

Then I loaded up my paintgun with my witches brew and fired away. Here is the result.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/1E78A0D2-D259-494B-8AF6-B7B699EC9381_zps2eitk5bd.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/1E78A0D2-D259-494B-8AF6-B7B699EC9381_zps2eitk5bd.jpg.html)

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/18F62222-7B21-4886-9009-A7FD06CFD60B_zpsvdq6mvhm.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/18F62222-7B21-4886-9009-A7FD06CFD60B_zpsvdq6mvhm.jpg.html)

The color is very close to the pics on the box art. Now mind you, these photos were taken under my fluorescent bench light. Afterwards, I turned on another overhead which is a standard yellow bulb and the color was even closer, so I think I achieved a very close match.
Next, I turned my attention to the cockpit, which is the first section in the instructions to be assembled. They start out by painting the seats, so I did that. Then they assemble the cockpit. Since I got the photoetch parts, most of the cockpit will be composed of those, and as you can see I am in the process of assembling them now. More to come, and enjoy!

Thanks guys! More work on the cockpit. I finished assembly of the photoetch set and applied the decals. Here is the cockpit with the seats in place.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/7D39FF92-8A8A-4D0F-838C-C064DC08876F_zpsrjwqnf0x.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/7D39FF92-8A8A-4D0F-838C-C064DC08876F_zpsrjwqnf0x.jpg.html)

And backlit to illustrate the decals. Though they dont show up very well in this pic, they do have multicolored dots to represent the different lights, so when I back light it, it will look like a lit panel.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CA82EBAE-F90C-4684-B0DF-ABB22502E419_zpsk9hiiazy.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CA82EBAE-F90C-4684-B0DF-ABB22502E419_zpsk9hiiazy.jpg.html)

Next I turned my attention to Chewy and went ahead and painted him. My thanks to Boyd for his suggestion that I add lighter colored highlights to his coat to emphasize the texture more. I think it worked well. Also colored the shoulder holster with aluminum.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/24DD489B-663A-41CD-8087-DF073D8AB2F2_zpscgulrhvk.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/24DD489B-663A-41CD-8087-DF073D8AB2F2_zpscgulrhvk.jpg.html)

And here he is sitting at his post in the cockpit.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CA09EC6C-8C20-449E-8BBF-D6F3FA410FCB_zpsnd77r9ja.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CA09EC6C-8C20-449E-8BBF-D6F3FA410FCB_zpsnd77r9ja.jpg.html)

The kit provides two Leaias (a sitting Empire Strikes Back version for the cockpit or a standing New Hope version), two sitting Solos ( New Hope or Empire), one Chewy, one Luke sitting and one Obi Wan sitting, as well as a couple of Storm Troopers standing. I need to check if there is also a standing Luke. Also, there is a sitting C3PO. I believe I will do the New Hope arrangement with Han, Chewy, Luke and Obi Wan reenacting the famous scene ("That's no moon...it's a space station..."). Not sure what to do with the other figures, but I'll "figure" something out...anyways, more to come.

More progress...the crew ready to be loaded into the cockpit.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/71B8A05C-30AB-48E9-8257-2656C51E33C2_zpscalpxbr9.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/71B8A05C-30AB-48E9-8257-2656C51E33C2_zpscalpxbr9.jpg.html)

And here they are in their seated positions (yes, Han's shirt color is different...Mr. Whitford pointed out his shirt wasnt so yellow, so I recolored with a beige to more closely approximate the movie)

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/BE0D1DC8-FAD7-46C1-A52F-DAE8AA4CF898_zpsukhkbo2y.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/BE0D1DC8-FAD7-46C1-A52F-DAE8AA4CF898_zpsukhkbo2y.jpg.html)

Here's the cockpit assembled and backlit. I used a 3 cool white LED strip glued to the bottom of the tunnel and facing up, as well as a piece of thin packing paper to diffuse the light.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/A50FE741-DE73-46F1-AC8D-E0475A8814FC_zpsujxfbqds.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/A50FE741-DE73-46F1-AC8D-E0475A8814FC_zpsujxfbqds.jpg.html)

Here is the top of the tunnel. Five of those greeblies were glued on by me. Can you pick them out?

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/3C064517-C83C-4F94-BA7F-53C308819E4C_zpslckem5r7.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/3C064517-C83C-4F94-BA7F-53C308819E4C_zpslckem5r7.jpg.html)

And finally, the radar dish assembled.

Quick update on my Falcon. Been assembling the gun turrets and the landing gear, as well as beginning the long job of gluing greeblies unto the hull.
First the turrets. I found some decals to glue on the inside, so I got some Testors decal paper, created the decals, and glued them in. To be honest, I was disappointed in the result. The decals did not stick very easily, and I went to all that trouble for nothing because they cant even be seen from the outside. Considered briefly lighting the turrets, but  atest with an SMD seemed too bright and didnt really show them, so I abandoned that idea. Apologies for not having pics of the decals in place, but you havent missed much. Cant see them. Here are the decals.

Its a shame they cant be seen, because they were kinda cool.
Here are the turrets assembled, as well as the landing gear, which still needs to be painted. Note the photoetch baffles in place.

Well doc, you are taking this thing on head first and showing it who is boss!  I am looking forward to seeing those bits-and-bobs get some paint!  This kit is wonderfully detailed, and the photo etch really does give it a look of realism that the plastic cannot (even though the plastic pieces look great themselves).  Listening to your updates on T.S. has me chomping at the bit for some more photos, so I can't wait for the next update!  Keep having fun my friend, because I am having fun watching your progress!   8)

Another update on my Falcon. Yesterday and today I worked on lighting the main engine. My goal was to achieve a diffuse, continuous and homogeneous glow throughout the engine strip with no hot spots whatsoever. Also, I wanted the engine to glow blue first and then white, and I wanted the white to be brighter than the blue. After exploring several possibilities and variations, I finally settled on a combination of a cool white LED strip, and blue SMDs. The key to avoiding, or at least attenuating hot spots is to achieve good hazing, either with a transluscent material, sanding, frosting with a color, such as white, or a combination of all of these. Also, the light sources should be as close as possible to each other, and as far as possible from the surface they are lighting which will be the surface the observer sees (my thanks to Adam, Mr. Atoz, for pointing out some of these principles).
To achieve as bright a light box effect as possible and as much reflection as possible, I first primered the inside of the main engine armature with white primer. Then I glued a thin white styrene strip to the back wall to make it smoother and more reflective. Then I glued the LED strip with 12 LEDs, and finally I glued each blue SMD in between each of the strip LEDs...a total of 11 SMDs. Then I painted the wires with white tulip paint and the rest of the strip between each light source with white Tamiya paint. Here are some pics unlit and then lit.

After that, I placed another white styrene strip in front and finally covered it with the provided grid. Two short demonstration videos are at the following links, one with the armature by itself, the other one mocked up in the model.

Another update, guys. As usual, my brain is churning with ideas and I have decided to complicate my life even more. In looking at reference pics and builds of this kit and the Falcon in general, I realized a lot of people were building it with the landing gear down and with lighting there. Also, landing gear doors were clearly visible, as well as what look like hanging hoses. To confirm this was actually part of the ship and not modeller imagination, I went back and saw "Empire Strikes Back". Sure enough, in multiple scenes this is seen, as well as lighting to the bottom saucer. Placements are hard to discern, but I do have some great references courtesy of my friend Jerry Hedgecock of HDAModelWorx. This presented a problem, because in my opinion this ship looks best when posed in flight mode. To me it looks more dynamic that way, but I wanted these details, so as per Chris Whitford's suggestion, I decided to build it as it is seen taking off the platform of the Cloud City as Leia, Chewy and Lando are making their getaway soon after Han gets encased in carbonite. The ship clearly shows the landing gear still down there because they are leaving in such a rush, I guess. This is perfect. I get the best of both worlds here. Now Jerry suggested I also build the platform as part of a diorama, but man, this is a big model, and the platform would be huge, so though I briefly considered the idea, I think its best just to use a standard base, and for that I already have some ideas. Anyway, this long intro is background so you understand the pics. The model comes with no landing gear doors, except closed, meant for building in flight mode. Here are a couple of pics of those.

I considered cutting them down the center of the closed door after filing away the edge excess plastic, but the result wouldnt have looked good, with surface greeblies cut in half. That left scratch building the doors as my only option, so that is what I decided to do. Here are pics.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/C6FCBD6D-4164-457D-B3AA-C6E1C00B5008_zpsaa4nz56e.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/C6FCBD6D-4164-457D-B3AA-C6E1C00B5008_zpsaa4nz56e.jpg.html)

And here it is with the landing gear in place, all dry fitted. Note the hose hanging down. That is actually  a piece of 20 gauge wire.

Finally, to really make sure I liked the look, I decided to paint and complete the assembly of one landing gear, complete with lights and the hose. If I liked it, then I would go thru the trouble of building four more sets of doors, since the kit has five landing gear legs. Here is the result.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/9D04899B-F418-4975-9C1F-58E4E3F8DC76_zpsg6uoowwv.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/9D04899B-F418-4975-9C1F-58E4E3F8DC76_zpsg6uoowwv.jpg.html)

Overall, I think the look is wonderful, so Ive decided to proceed with the rest of the legs.
I also decided to add an additional light to the cockpit, because I wasnt quite happy with how dark the figures lookked. I slipped an SMD over the top of the cockpit to illuminate from above.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/BB7DD76D-73B1-44D0-B87A-0E8F0D13B8B9_zps3vxb66cd.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/BB7DD76D-73B1-44D0-B87A-0E8F0D13B8B9_zps3vxb66cd.jpg.html)

And with the backlight on as well.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/8C5D81B6-D162-46F1-B9C4-B73FD47E257A_zps8erqzged.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/8C5D81B6-D162-46F1-B9C4-B73FD47E257A_zps8erqzged.jpg.html)

And finally, after gluing more greeblies unto the upper saucer, I switched gears and decided to proceed with the light placements on the lower saucer. Here are my first two red beacons in the front. Note the completed lit landing gear in the background.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/77ABADF8-7C1F-4901-8904-E25C9109BAB9_zpsxagtachm.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/77ABADF8-7C1F-4901-8904-E25C9109BAB9_zpsxagtachm.jpg.html)

This kit is definitely full of firsts for me, including most obviously my first real scratch build of a part, so I am very excited about the possibilities here. More to come, and enjoy!

I am definitely shooting for inscale lighting Diz, so its good that you noticed. Im trying to keep the light orifices small, though some are supposed to be bigger than others.

Here we go with another update. Apologies for the delay, but a certain Enterprise D was calling me to finish her, so I did. Now back to my regularly scheduled build. When last we left off, I was completing assembly of the landing gears, with the rear doors scratch built and the front doors kit bashed from the provided parts in the kit. That was previously shown and has been finished. Here is a pic.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/EC2968CE-E8B5-4196-97A6-D4B4F4C8058F_zpsounsf65u.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/EC2968CE-E8B5-4196-97A6-D4B4F4C8058F_zpsounsf65u.jpg.html)

My work for the past couple of days since I got back to this build has consisted mostly of organizing the wiring inside the model, which is rather extensive, seeing as how I have decided to use individual SMDs for each light on the bottom hull. Here are pics showing the progress and incremental number of wires as more were added.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/FCB1C88A-9D60-44FA-B8D8-6816164D1030_zpsat7aiggw.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/FCB1C88A-9D60-44FA-B8D8-6816164D1030_zpsat7aiggw.jpg.html)

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/2AAA8024-2D9B-437F-A162-211AB7268C40_zpsb573ode1.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/2AAA8024-2D9B-437F-A162-211AB7268C40_zpsb573ode1.jpg.html)

Most of the lighting has been completed, except for a couple of spots.
A test base with clear styrene rods was hastily assembled as a proof of concept to see if I could display the ship in a dynamic position with a small base.

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CB612868-32DB-4CC0-BA99-CAE1956B0FC2_zps8aextikk.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/CB612868-32DB-4CC0-BA99-CAE1956B0FC2_zps8aextikk.jpg.html)

Looks like it may be possible with some refinements and embellishments.

Last night I began some of the weathering, mainly in the exposed mechanism areas of the ship on the top hull. I started that before the rest of the hull because these parts are recessed and I wanted to make sure it could be done and would look good. I used Createx flat black and water as a pin wash to create the initial highlighting of the lines inside. Then I applied Alclad Exhaust Manifold color with a light airbrushing feathering technique to get an uneven pattern of areas of darkening and areas that were less dark, using the wonderful pictures of the 30 inch model used in ESB and ROJ, as well as slight staining of the edges.
Here is a pic from the studio model:

(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab26/Armando_De_La_Cabada/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/FC074FD6-47F0-490D-B082-724C97612B70_zps7ccmgdef.jpg) (http://s846.photobucket.com/user/Armando_De_La_Cabada/media/Model%20kit%20builds/Millenium%20Falcon%201%2072%20from%20Fine%20Molds/FC074FD6-47F0-490D-B082-724C97612B70_zps7ccmgdef.jpg.html)

Notice that in the first one, the detail greeblies are not painted...in the second one they are, blending in nicely with the rest of the ship and adding incredible texture to it.

I have to say, I think that the painting and weathering, which was the part I feared most, may actually turn out to be the most fun. I have great reference pics to follow, so I think the result might actually come out decent.
As always, check out my video on DLC Model Builders. Thanks for watching!

Brief update today. Got the rotating potentiometers today and soldered them into the circuit. Here is a short proof of concept video. Ill be experimenting with the sliding potentiometers next, as well as different resitance values on different potentiometers.

http://youtu.be/QhRUkKd2H1U

So far I have 20k ohm potentiometers. Expect 10k ohm in any day now, but I may end up having to get higher resistance ones. You'll see why in the video.

You might have to use higher value for the blue. You can try putting a resistor
in series with your pot to the blue increasing the value till you don't get the
glow with the pot turned all the way down.

Title: Re: Millenium Falcon 1/72 scale by Fine Molds (Modified)
Post by: Armandodlc on April 05, 2014, 03:00:57 am
I suppose I could try that Tank, but already each of the blue SMDs (all 11 eleven of them) each have a 470 ohm resistor. I dont want to make it too faint. I suppose I could add like a 100 ohm between the pot and the SMDs and see what happens, but if the light looks fainter it wont work. Alternatively, I could just try a higher value pot.
Now now 3rd, Im just trying to make her look pretty! :)
Title: Re: Millenium Falcon 1/72 scale by Fine Molds (Modified)
Post by: Tankton on April 05, 2014, 03:05:29 am
A 100 ohm might be all it takes. With your pot all the way down you
still have enough forward voltage to make them glow. But if the ship
was powered up might there not be a slight glow coming from the engines
as they were staying warmed up?

Yea, I thought that when I saw the soft glow, but I want the engine lighting to be gradual from completely dark to fully lit. Just think it would look cooler.
We'll see...I still need to find a place to hide the potentiometers...

You'll figure something out Armando!
Maybe let the pot adjusting knob through in an inconspicuous spot and disguise it as a greeblie?
A hydraulic hose slips on and off the knob, allowing for adjustment?
It'll come to you...I have faith!!  :)

Another update guys. I have spent the last few days mostly gluing greeblies onto the hulls. This model is mostly about greeblies, but there really is no other way to achieve the incredible texturing and depth these give the hull surface. Here are some shots of the areas I have worked on. Some are already painted, others are not.
In a couple of instances, I was forced to scratch build tiny parts that I dropped and simply could not find. Some of these parts are so small it is hard to handle them.

I have also realized that these greeblies are delicate and sometimes prone to pop off if you accidentally grab the model anywhere near them. Since a lot of the surface will be covered with them, it behooves me to pay more attention so this doesn't happen.

I also settled on a spot for my potentiometers for the main engines, and I decided to use sliding potentiometers. For the whie LED strip, I used a 100k ohm potentiometer which cut the light down to just a faint glow. Couldnt get it to shut off completely. For the blue SMDs, I settled on a 20k ohm potentiometer. The 100k killed it down too much and it wouldnt glow to full brightness even at the highest setting. I hid the potentiometers on the roof of the landing ramp door.

Excellent work Armando.

I really like the faders for the engine effects and that is a great place to hide them. I love the fact that the model will be self contained with power using the rechargeable battery. That makes the display options just about endless. Very cool my friend. KUTGW :)

I have been getting a play by play on this build up, and everyone else has pretty much summed up the great work you are doing here.  You have kept overcoming every obstacle that this kit throws at you (damn micro parts jumping off your bench included)!  You are taking this great kit, of my personal favorite ship, and doing it justice my friend; keep up the outstanding work and keep having fun man!   8)

I was thinking the same thing Kenny. Looks like HLJ has put a stop on orders for now though, must be too many wanting one  ;D

Thanks Kenny! Appreciate that. Yea, looks like HLJ placed orders on hold til May, Kila. They must have been overwhelmed with demand. I got my order in just in time. Price is up too. Up to 185 or so.

Hmmm....  increased orders would not cause most companies to stop taking orders or make product?

Perhaps HLJ has discovered they can only offer "glow in the dark" versions at this time?

But hey, I have the AMT one, and I'm planning to use your thread as reference for the conversion. Thanks a lot for taking the time to keep us updated! :)

Ok, coming up on the homestretch now. I have completed the lighting and mods, sealed the model, placed all the decals and tonight I worked on tidying up light leaks. Once that was done, I hit the model with the dull coat, and then did my first layer of weathering. Some pics:

Here are a couple after sealing it, testing the lights.

Here is the first panel after weathering. Note the difference between it and the adjacent panels. The warmth and coloration added are amazing.

The plan for tomorrow will be to proceed with the second layer of weathering. I plan to follow FichtenFoo's technique. He is very skilled and a true artist with this. His videos are on YouTube. After that, I will do the streaking. Also, I plan on using pigments to simulate and enhance the soot around the smokestacks. All in all, I am very pleased with how it is looking so far. I think I may be finished this week. We shall see. As usual, I'll have a short update video on my channel tomorrow. Enjoy.

Ok, the Falcon is finished. Now I am working on the base, and I am exploring several options. I'll post pics soon. For now, here is a new video showing the final weathering. Enjoy.

Dam that looks awesome. I've long admired this kit and you've done in justice, completely, from the landing bays to the lighting to the weathering, everything looks great. Real keen to see how your base turns out for her. Another work of art.

Well, with a touch of anticipation and holding my breath I placed an order for one of these with HLJ. It'll be the most expensive kit I've bought yet. Looks like more overtime for me  ;D
Armando, sorry to say I'll be stealing borrowing your build ideas on this.

That is one gorgeous Millennium Falcon. I really hope that I can make mine at least close as good as you Armando. It's mostly the weathering that I'm scared of. :D

Outstanding work! About the base and keeping in mind the lack of space in my apartment to display such a big model, I came up with this idea: Find (or do) a huge wall decal that shows the back of the bridge of a Star Destroyer, so you can hang the falcon in the wall to recreate this scene from the movie
(http://www.theforce.net/SWTC/Pix/dvd/ep5/avenger2.jpg)

I think it's a nice solution and will look just awesome! No lights tho  ;D

Well Armando, my hat is definitely off to you!  Absolutely fantastic job on the Falcon!!
The immense effort you put in shows in spades.  The lighting is incredible!  The assembly, paint and weathering
are top notch!  Just one very tiny little niggle for me is the radar dish and frame look a bit too clean when compared to the rest of the ship.  Now, this could very well be the video resolution.  I hate to even mention it, but I know you always take constructive comments with an open mind and in the best interest of the model.

Stellar job my friend!  It's a treat to watch this one!  Looking forward to seeing the full scope with the base.  :)

Wow...thanks everyone. Your comments and encouragement are truly appreciated. It is a beautiful kit and I had a blast putting it together.
FT, thank you man, and you're absolutely right. The radar dish IS cleaner. I think part of the reason is I just plain forgot to add more weathering to it, since I was so focused on the hulls, the upper one especially. I suppose I can add a touch more to dirty it up a bit ;)...only problem is, since the switch is hidden under it, I cant use the pigments so much...more likely I'll just add a bit more oil paint weathering. Not sure what you mean by the frame. Are you talking about the side panels? I grunged them up some and added some airbrushing, but they didnt look as dirty on the reference pics that came with the kit.
Sergio, that is a good idea! I'll keep it in mind, though I am leaning more towards a lexan or polycarbonate base with clear coat. Still, it would look cool on the wall like that :).
Finn, I was scared of the weathering too, but really, its actually not hard at all. Did it in a couple of days. You'll do a great job, Im sure of it.
Kila, feel free to "borrow" any and all ideas if you like, and ask any questions you might have about the kit.
Thanks Wolf! She is a beaut.
I am very pleased Bill...thanks!

What I mean by "frame" Armando, is the little structure that supports the dish itself.  :)

Wow Armando, I've enjoyed the few times watching it come together on Hangouts, and watching your progress here. As a new builder, it is truly inspiring the work you have done. The self-enclosed battery and display options available with your work is truly awesome, as well as your lighting and the vast electronics work put into it. The weathering is looking great, and attention to details on many of the top panel sections was fun to watch come together!

I'd love to utilize your experience when I get to a point to build my own Falcon someday, and your approach, design, and ingenuity in electronics is just straight up awesome. Wow.

Thanks Boyd! I hope the thread helps out to any who decide to put together this kit. As for the base, I've taken to saying that "in Jerry we trust" ;)...I think if we can make it work right, it will display the model just right..in my opinion anyway.
Lufty, I truly appreciate your comments, and any way I can help, just let me know.
Thanks Piper!
Gotcha FT...I'll endeavor to "dirty up" that dish a bit more ;)
Thaks Mike!
