Hi All

Here is my date recorded image of my collection of bits for my scratch build Borg drone and Borg Alcove

I hope everyone has a great time building, hope that you all don't have too many problems to overcome, and I wish everybody success with their projects.

Thanks guys i have the project in my minds eye.  So tomorrow is blueprint day. The plasma disc is 2,5 inches in diameter so all the schematics revolve around that.

Hi all you Spring builders  ;D

I would like to categorise my Borg themed build as a scratch build. However, there is one item which was purchased specifically for its purpose. I have a mini plasma disc which as you all know would sit at the top of the alcove.

Since the scratch build category requires the build to be 100% scratch built, I don't know if the build would qualify.

The build will consist of:-

The Borg alcove
The Drone
A gangway/walkway
Supporting walls

If Boyd/Chris could invoke a ruling on this matter, I would appreciate it

Bill

Title: Re: Resistance is Futile!
Post by: billski on March 04, 2014, 09:24:43 am
Hi 3rd its going to be roughly 1/6th scale. This is based on the plasma disc being 2.75 inches diameter, which I will reduce to to 2 inches. After research, the size of the drone's head needs to be just over the inch. Based on a ratio of 8:1 the figure will be approx 9 inches tall. The alcove will sit at 12 inches from base to hood. This will sit on a gangway, another 1/2 inch depth. The supporting walls will stretch a further 6 inches either side of the alcove, which should make the total width of 16 inches. I will start the blueprints at sometime this week

Ok, Bill I am really looking forward to seeing this given that it is the BORG and pretty much a total scratch build!!!   I must admit, I love the idea and I am envious.  Creating a Borg alcove sounds like such fun!  I am looking forward to seeing more.  Way to go!

Hi all,

Nice to see so many starts to some fantastic builds for the Comp!

Here we are, starting with the blueprint stage. This is a front view of the basic alcove shape

And a side view...

I sketched a figure 9 inches high and inserted him to see how it all fits

I am pleased with the basic outline and will start the alcove skeleton soon

Thanks for looking
Bill

Thanks 3rd the drone wont end up that ripped. I needed to highligjht muscle groups for the actual scuplting. The drones armour plating will cover up most of that. The alcove works out to be 13,5 inches high. The plasma disc will be angled down

Working afternoon's today so time to start my Borg Alcove.

The base is two fish tank filter trays in which turned the right way hold gravel inside. There will be another two to place in front for the walk way.

Starting off with the base of the alcove, I cut and laid 3mm square end plasticstruct rods, and placed a 3mm yellow LED in temporary position as an up light.

Using 1.5mm black styrene I drilled out, then cut out a diamond shape in the base plate. On the underside of the base plate I used a piece of Aluminium mesh from a car repair shop and a piece of opaque styrene to detail the base plate centre.

I need to have the up light illuminate more

Using a cut sheet of white 1mm styrene, I re-enforced the sides with right angled beading. I secured the bottom to the base with some flat head screws

To make the base support beams, I used more plastistruct, I cut two "H" bars, cutting them at 45 degrees

Glueing them into position was quite tricky. I used a mini spirit level as a support on the back of the alcove wall to hold the structure at 90 degrees whilst holding the support beam

Getting this far, it is always good to cross check with the blueprints and the representation of the drone which will be sculpted

Next I turned my Attention to the overhead lid. I used some smaller gauge "H" bars, measured with the blueprints. I cut out the slot in the front piece and placed a strip of aluminium mesh in the back

Thanks for looking, more tomorrow!

Bill

I am glad to see the project starting construction!  I wasn't actually sure what your project might shape up to look like at first, but once the blue prints went up I was able to visualize it.  Now with the alcove itself starting to take shape, I am going to be gaining more building techniques as a new model maker myself.  Keep up the great work!  (The sculpting is going to be a whole new area for me to watch, so I am looking forward to that phase just as much).   8)

Hi Guys,

A bit more done today, although it doesn't look alot, but cutting and trimming templates, marking out and shaping styrene seems to take alot longer lol

First and cut out the shaped/angled beams which go in front of the secondary wall. This was a bit tricky for me, but I got a decent amount of symmetry.

Now I added detail to the beams using carved styrene, scavenged discs, tie wrap and 2mm rods

Testing the position of the beams against the back wall of the alcove

Tomorrow will be working on the secondary wall, adding pipes, boxes, bit and bobs

thanks for looking

Bill

More updates from yesterday and today

I have been working the detail on the secondary wall using wire, tie wraps, washers, sprues, all sorts of stuff. This will stand 5mm from the back wall. Gave the whole project a spray with grey primer.

still lots of detail still to do on this wall then i have two more walls to do

Thanks Guys, I have a few screen shots of alcoves and every one is different and don't show the detail I need. When you do find a good picture, there is always a darn drone standing in the way! ( The Borg have no manners)

I decided to take an overview of the design theme and the make up of the structure.

Hi again,

A Little more done today, built the alcove top and put it in its place, not fixed in yet. I cut a slot to insert the plasma disc, and put everything together with blue tack to see how it all looks....

I have to angle the plasma disc downward, so need to figure out how to do that, also a way of removing the disc when batteries need changing.

thanks for looking

Looking good Bill
How is the disc mounted now?  Could you make a small angled box with a hole to plug it into?   Or a bracket from the ceiling would still be hidden.  Just throwing ideas around.
Title: Re: Resistance is Futile! (Scratch Build)
Post by: billski on March 14, 2014, 12:47:46 pm
thanks Steve a couple of good ideas. The disc is actually a belt clip. people wear it for parties and raves. i have made a slot on the back wall. i could shorten the clip on the back and mount a wedge to angle it down. I do intend to reduce the diameter of the disc by covering with styrene and making the hole a diameter of 2 inches.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. Sunday will see the start of the other walls. Continuing with the overlay theme i will cut out shapes in the walls and have borg pnels showing through the holes. I will also have panels on the front to give a 3 layer effect. Hopefully by the end of next week i will have completed the background ready for preshading. Then i will start thinking about the sculpting

Thanks guys, your encouragement is most welcome. I spent a few hours Monday/Tuesday, sorting out what to do with the second wall, finding the bits and laying out components.

I decided to cut out "windows" in the wall and place panels behind. Here is the work accomplished as of Tuesday morning

I added a couple of LED's to work out how best to add accent lighting to the panels

Thanks guys for all the kind comments!

I must say that I would hate to be a judge on this contest, it is going to be difficult to chose an overall winner. As I scan over all the build logs, I gaze at the screen in amazement wishing that I could build models as good as you guys, but the fun in this hobby is knowing that you can get better by building something.

Keep going guys, it seems that competition brings out the best in modellers, it's great fun!!!

Hello again

Worked on the third and final wall yesterday and today, still detail to add, but I thought that I might share the progress

The parts were added to panels of 2mm styrene and glued in place around the back

A couple of close ups

Here are the three walls together to give you guys an appreciation of scale, any suggestions, please feel free

I will need another session to finish the walls off with more detail. Next I will move back to the Alcove adding the upper supports for the canopy, the back disc which sits below the plasma disc, and the alcove arm rests ( for want of a better description)
Soon it will be preshading then it might be time to start gluing everything in place

thanks for looking and your continued support

Bill

Wow thanks guys, I am really pleased that my peers think that this build is going the right way. It has been a challenge working out what parts look borg and futuristic and what parts look naff. I have learned that trimming a part such as a gear stick or a shell casing can take on a new look, so dont throw anything away.

All the sprue from previous builds and tie wraps are invaluable as are washers, o rings bell wire and tanks spares.

All that I have really had to purchase is some styrene sheets and struts. i strongly recommend you guys having a go at scratch building, it is very addictive.

Ofcourse the success of this build will my ability to sculpt a borg drone using polymer clay. I should be able to start sculpting mid April

Thanks guys, love working on this project. I managed to get alot done today, so here goes....

I started building the arm rests/ barriers for the central piece.

I measured and cut out the basic shape from 1mm styrene sheeting

Using a square 5mm bar to bulk out the arm rest

I then added a 7mm border to the edge and 7mm rectangles. I found some 1mm piping from the little one's craft box and created the design on the inside of the rest. One side down three more to go!

I spent alot of time adding more detail to the third wall, here it is completed and primed. More tank pieces, wire, cogs, washers and what nots used

A couple of close ups of the third wall detail

There is all three walls attached to the base, the central pieces are not attached yet as more lighting is to go inbetween the panels

I even had time to play with some LED's today, again trying to resistor them to give an accent glow. I finally worked out a way to angle the plasma disc downward, so that is also in a temporary position.

There is still lots to do, but confident that it will be finished on time

Thanks for looking
Bill

Again, just fantastic work here Bill!!  :)
Title: Re: Resistance is Futile! (Scratch Build)
Post by: billski on April 06, 2014, 08:58:29 am
Hi guys and thanks again for the support. I need to reduce the size of the plasma disc, it is out of proportion. I plan to house the disc in styrene and have the opening of 5cm diameter, the disc is 7cm diameter.

I don't know about the green really, none of the shots from TNG, Voyager, and First Contact show much green light inside the ships, so I may remove it unless anyone knows better.

Steve, I was scratching my head thinking what can I use for this detail, tooth picks; too thick, styrene slices; may but difficult to cut, fibre optic; too tight fisted to waste any of that lol.

Hi Guys,

Nearly made a huge error. I forgot about the super firm sculpey clay sitting in the shed, drying out day after day. (I bought it the last week in March)

I didn't want to go through the long winded task of re-preparing the clay, so it's time to start sculpting!

This is the equipment I will use for the Borg Drone.

A block of 454g super firm sculpey. This is great stuff, firmer than ordinary clay as it can retain very fine detail. This needs to be oven baked when the sculpt is finished.

A 5 meter reel of armature wire, 2mm thickness

Some sculpting and shaping tools

Using the sketch of the figure, I first shaped the wire into the head, centre body and legs. The armature is slightly smaller all the way around as to form the skeleton

Adding the wire to make the chest cross piece and extending down to the arms. I also added the torso outline. When sculpting you need to have the subject upright, so I found a base from an old plastic kit

I wanted to keep the final sculpt as light as possible, so bulking out the skeleton with tin foil is a good way to achieve this. Bulk out the arms and legs, using 2 to 3 inch squares of tin foil, ensuring that the ends are secure and don't move about

There is the block of clay, it is easier to cut slices off the block as and when needed. Keep the block warm by placing it when not in use under a lamp with at least a 60 watt bulb.

The cut slice is about 4mm thick, I then use a rolling pin the roll it out to approximately 1mm, this does two things; first it is easier to apply to the skeleton, second, it works the moisture back into the clay. I then cut the clay into strips, again for ease of application

Please note.... DO NOT use knives, rolling pins, kitchen chopping boards, the clay can make people unwell, so I bought these items especially for this task

Starting at the shoulder area, I added clay strips to the skeleton, building up the thickness of the upper torso. It is good to check the sketch template against the build up, I use a school compass to check dimensions. At this stage the upper torso is about half the thickness I want.

This is the rear front (obviously). At this stage I am not worried about smoothing the clay too much, more getting the correct shape and contour of the body right

The side view, you can see that the chest and should blade area need further bulking out

Because the sculpt is getting a little top heavy, I decided to work down a leg. Again working from the thigh down, I added pieces of clay by wrapping it around the leg and finishing that piece to a point. Once again, I check the template for dimensions at the thigh, knee, and calf area. The foot is started from the base and shaped up to the ankle area, the foot will remain flat at the moment until I transfer the figure to a stone base for baking. Here are some shots of the leg area.

Hopefully more tomorrow, thanks for looking

Bill

Title: Re: Resistance is Futile! (Scratch Build)
Post by: billski on April 09, 2014, 06:43:56 am
I have had more time to continue the sculpture this morning, so here goes.

Using the same strip clay process, I built up the other leg. The second limb is always more challenging due to the basic fact that both limbs have to look the same. This is just one hour's work for one leg lol

A view of both legs from the rear. Still a bit of pushing and shoving about to do, but nearly there

Moved onto the arms which I found a little more difficult. You have to understand a little about the muscle groupings to get the right connection between shoulder blade, top of arm and chest area. The danger is that you can end up with the whole shoulder area looking massive

There is the second arm in place, again I found this difficult to match the bicep on the other arm. I had to go back and do this again. Working with smaller pieces, I matched the shoulder angle, then the bicep to the elbow, making sure that both elbow joints were level to the bottom of the rib cage. Now both top of arm areas looking about the same, not perfect, but I can take a second look whilst performing the smoothing stage.

So here he is, 50% body work done.

So what happen next? I will need to sculpt the head and neck tomorrow, the left hand will be sculpted off the figure and attached before baking. The right arm will have a Borg appendage, again this will be sculpted off figure.

Once these bits are done, then I will move onto the body armour and detail.

thanks for looking
Bill

Here again guys, striking whilst the iron is hot, I started working on the left hand.

First I flattened a spoon shaped piece of clay and compared it to the template

Using my own hand as a guide I separated the clay into sausage fingers and carved the lines roughly on the palm

The next bit is tricky, I elongated the fingers, rolling them gently into the shapes I wanted. The temptation is to roll too much, then you end up loosing a finger or two. At this stage it is important not to lose shape of the knuckle area.

When you have the finger thickness about right, chop the ends off leaving the fingers at the right length. As a guide, your middle finger is as long as your palm.
Turning the hand over, I indented the clay to form the knuckles and run a soft edge dowel down the back of the hand to show the bone structure.

The finger nail are indented aswell, and lines are scratched across the finger joints

The palm lines are smoothed out alittle and the whole hand is cupped to show a relaxed feel.

Not yet perfect, but a decent start!
More soon
Bill

LOL thanks guys, never seen so many hand puns in one sequence. I may have to start again on the hand, I feel that it is 10% too big. I will fit the hand and try to trim and blend, but it maybe easier to make new.

The head construction is coming along, it is a good shape, but the nose and mouth is very difficult to master. I will post up my first efforts later.

Ok, probably the last update for the week. Today I have been working on the head, so there goes.

First the head shape, I rolled a chunk of clay into a ball and pulled one side out, this gives a sort of light bulb shape. This was compared to the template. Last week I had a chat to some members and I made a decision to increase the overall height to 10 inches.

Here is the desired blank shape, the face part at this stage is near vertical as possible because later on I will add the features to this flat piece.

Fitting the head on the sculpture at this stage is critical because the head needs to look as though it belongs to the whole shoulder area. I hollowed out the neck, pinched the wire together and place the head gently into position. the neck is blended in roughly. This does disturb the the shoulders, but that will have to be fixed later

To find the position of the eyes, use an edge placed on top of the head and another under the jaw line, half way between those points is the eye position. I marked this with a horizontal line, and marked the centre of the face with a vertical line

Now the scary part, using a dowel, indent the eye sockets on this line and between the sockets where the top of the nose bridge starts.

Filling out the eye sockets with alittle more clay is achieved by a thin strip of clay

This is blended around the eye sockets

Title: Re: Resistance is Futile! (Scratch Build)
Post by: billski on April 11, 2014, 04:27:11 pm

I added more clay to fill out the brow and placed a small strip of clay for the nose

The brow line is blended in down to the upper eye socket, and the nose shaped. The easiest way to do this is to think of the nose as have 3 x 2 sides, 3 on top and 3 underneath. This enables you to shape a basic angled nose then you can blend this into what type of nose shape you want. To achieve nostril shape, simply stick a shaping tool into the underside of the nose, this creates the nostril and gives shape to the upper nose area. Bear in mind that the nose is about 5mm long

Blending excess clay from the nose and eye socket area also help create cheek bones, these have to be shaped, and here you can see the structure of the face starting to appear.

I added a piece of clay to the underside of the nose to create the mouth at this point. Working too much on the cheek bone would be a waste of time at this point.

The mouth clay is blended downward away from the nose, the centre of the upper lip crease is indented and the upper lip is curled up slightly by slitting the clay and pushing upwards. This makes the open mouth, by blending the clay towards the chin you create the lower lip, this needs to be shaped to give the desired expression. I don't want a smiling Borg.
With the mouth in place, I started to shape the cheek bones and the cheeks themselves. The tricky is to keep the same look from side to side.

Another piece of clay was added to the eye socket which will form the eye, the other socket will have a Borg implant

To form the eye, insert a rounded edge tool into the corner of the eye and indent slightly, repeat for the opposite corner this action results in you getting a rounded eye ball and top and bottom eyelids

Blending the eye lids in is trickier than it looks, this is the result after 3 goes at it. It is nearly there, I need to reform the brow area above that eye and close the eye lids more. The eye looks okay in person, the photo doesn't do the work justice if I may be so bold.

I also near enough shaped the check bones, cheeks, chin and jaw line. I will move onto the neck on my next visit to the bench and make the Borg implant which will be made from styrene. This will be imprinted onto the other eye socket but removed for the baking process

All in all I am reasonably pleased with the results, still got alot of blending to do, and also how to work out the sculpring method for the ears. It has not been very successful so far

Thanks for looking, sorry about the length of the post, but I thought it might be of interest to do a detailed step by step

Bill

Hi again guys, its been a while since my last update, so my apologies, deep in decorating Chloe's bedroom!

I have managed to grab a few hours here and there adding armour and detail to the Borg Drone.

Here are a few shots of what is the completed detail. I just need to smooth out the handling buffs.

This shot includes the detail in the prosthetic arm, abdomen, and hand, I sculpted the detail, then added striped magnet wire on top

The head shot, the face tweaked a little, a scar running down the check where the prosthertic eye will be, 4 layers of chest armour.

This is the left arm showing the armour and hand with the probe tubes running down each finger

The detail on the side of the head, this will have styrene detail on top added after baking

The back detail
(http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh81/BillT_photos/SG100151.jpg)

A side view of the prosthetic arm, styrene claw blades will be added, again after baking

Thanks for looking

Bill

Thank you guys for your support!

Whilst baking the Borg drone, it was time to start on Borg drone two.

Again the first part is building the armature. I can't draw females, so I downloaded a front, back and side sketch of an anatomically correct female and printed it off at 8 inches tall.

This is the basic wire armature

To save clay, I padded the structure with tin foil

I switched polymer clay and used the normal super sculpey, as the firm grey clay is a little difficult to manipulate after a couple of hours, BIG MISTAKE! Although easier to cut and move around you have to be very very careful that you don't disturb what you have just shaped. My advice after 2 hours of sculpting a face only for it to look like a gorilla, is don't use the normal/original sculpey unless you know what you are doing.

I decided to return to the firm grey sculpey for the head and use the normal clay for the body.

Here are a few shots of today's work. Torso complete, head shape done, face still to work on though

Time for another quick update. Adding armour to the female Borg, loosely based on seven of nine

Back to the male drone. Today is a public holiday in the UK, so no work!!!!

Got all the gardening done yesterday, so I have had a full day on this project.

I got the female drone baked, no mishaps! and primed, so whilst she was cooling down, I started painting the male

First job was to select a flesh colour, this is Humbrol acrylic ( number 61), I used this because this paint is really thick, so this image is just after one coat

Not forgetting the left hand

Using revell aqua beige acrylic, I tried to replicate the skin of a Borg drone, this is the first pre-shade coat

Next the body armour was painted in dark sea grey, again an Humbrol acrylic

When the base coat was dry, I sponged some tamiya bronze over the entire armour

The head was given a white/grey wash to blend the beige in more and to lighted up the flesh colour. The first stab at the eye was made and some shading using dark grey, dry brushed

A shot of the abdomen, first coat painted in bronze aswell

Thanks for looking

Bill

Hi guys, thank you for all the words of encouragement. On the final straight on the male drone

First of all, another bronze sponging over the armour followed by enamel gold to highlight the edging. This was applied with a smaller sponge

Added tubes which are pieces of circuit wire and small tank parts for extra detail

I mixed white with light ghost great and a touch of flesh colour and gave the head another coat. I also painted the tubes and implants on the head

I shaped a small piece of styrene for the eyepiece, I also added a small diamond shape crystal and ran 1mm FO from the crystal, through the head and down the back. Attaching the FO end to a 3mm white LED. The crystal was painted with tamiya clear red

The finishing touch was the shape and add the claw on the prosthetic arm

I am calling him done, next to tackle the painting on the female

thanks for looking
Bill

Hi guys,

Back on the Borg project, this week, painting. I chose a car paints for the alcove, gunmetal metallic for a vauxhall, and dark grey metallic, Ford.  The gold highlights is a Revell enamel

Here is a couple of shots showing the detail

The female drone is now finished and will stand to the left of the centre piece alcove

Here is the male drone actually in the alcove with the plasma disk behind him

Finally a couple of shots showing the size/scale

All that's left to are the arm rests for the alcove, the front guard rail, the computer screen, and the ceiling, phew

thanks for looking

Thanks guys. I would recommend people to have a go at sculpting, it is cheap, and very addictive. I used firm grey sculpey, it is alot firmer than normal super sculpey which means that it is easier to use. The clay retains any detail to add after baking and can be sanded and painted with acrylics and all other paint types.

Your build certainly got me thinking about trying it Bill. It certainly does open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Give it a go Armando!
I approached the sculpts systematically, using sketches at the correct dimensions, front, rear and side views. I built the armature 1 to 2cm narrower and shorter than the reference sketches. Adding small pieces of well kneed clay, you can cross check each part of the sculpt using callipers . I downloaded a basic muscle grouping image and used that as a guide. It is important not to short cut adding the muscle area's as you find yourself correcting and correcting to achieve symmetry.

I found a great you tube tutorial for head sculpting by Jodi Creager, she takes you through about 8 or 9 shorts vids which includes painting, here is the link... Look up creagers sculpting lessons 1 through 8

Been watching this on G+ looks fantastic! The detail you were able to put into this, and the model-figure making, is top notch. Great project.

Hi guys,

Finally I have finished the Borg Alcove, added the ceiling and guard rail, and hooked up the lights. Sorry for the poor photo's, I will take more tomorrow and place them in the gallery.

Thank you for all the kind words, may I thank Boyd, Chris and the moderators for coming up with the idea for a group build. This tends to focus the mind and to create wonderful models, the contest has shown me that the community has oodles of great guys out there, willing to take time out of their busy lives to help or advise fellow modellers and encourage their peers to complete.

Wonderful contest with lots of diversity, I would hate to judge it, so good luck.

Can't wait for the next one!!!

having had the pleasure to see this build in the flesh as it has progressed from idea to completed build, i've gotta say that the pictures dont do this half the justice it deserves...  this is a stunning build, and certainly deserves a podium position,

well done Bill,
