Title: War of the Worlds Diarama - Spring Build (Diorama)
Post by: Mstowell on February 28, 2014, 06:31:14 am
Here's my entry.
Because I am going to be adding a 3rd ship to the diorama, this is a picture with parts from both kits, that I purchased.

I've light blocked the ships and made up strip lights.
Light test photos.
Once I paint the clear parts green and add them to ship, I think this is going to work well.

Ok, here is another light test.
I have drilled out the holes for where the force field legs would be.
I am going to fill them in with clear acrylic and paint green as they are in the movie.
A bit hard to see that it is lit, but it is.
Enjoy

Hello All,
Been a couple of days since I've posted anything.
I've been trying to work out the lighting.
Came to the determination that strip lights do not get enough light out to the wing tips.
Unfortunately I don't have any LEDs smaller than 3mm, and they are too big to fit in the tight space near the tips.  :-\
I've order some 2MM lighthouse LEDs. Hopefully they will fit.  If anyone has any suggestions, they will be appreciated.
Here are some pics of progress.
Before and after shots of lenses.  The green color is good.  The front lens lights up nicely with strip light.
Also a shot of neck adds to tops.
Enjoy.

Hi Paubin,
What's FO?
I think if I can get the lighting to the wings I will be in good shape.
I've thought about adding sound, but don't have any idea how to go about that.

Sorry about the abbreviation FO = Fiber Optics. As far as sound goes, try pulling sound bites off of the old movies. I'm pretty sure that they are on dvd.

Paint job is looking top notch Mstowell!!  Very nice indeed!

Reguarding the light thing,  you can file and reshape the head on the LED till your hearts content.  Just be careful not to go down to the metal diode itself.  I agree with the other Guys though, fibre optics would prolly be the way to go here.  Keep up the fine work my man!  :)

Thanks for the suggestions about using fiber optic.
I may gave that a try, but my question is, where do you purchase it from?
I've seen it on ebay, but it seems to be much large quantities than I would ever use.

Thank,
Matt

Hi Matt we can buy it in the UK by the metre from ebay. You will be suprised by how much you will use. Our price is less than a dollar.

Try plastruct.com for smaller quantities. If you have trouble getting to their catalog, just google plastruct catalog and you'll find a PDF file. This catalog is a scratch builders paradise. The fiber optics is towards the end of the catalog. It's 256 pages I believe. Good luck !

Try these guys. They sell 'packs' of different-diameter rolls, and it's not too pricey.

I little progress on the sherman tanks.
1st photo is prepaint.
2nd photo is a start on the paint.  I am going to try doing some weathering to the tanks.

On another note.
I got the 2mm LEDs that I was planning to use to light the wing tips. They are still to big.
So, I am going to use FO.
Hopfully will have photos of that in a few days.
Although I've not used FO before.
I assume that I can drill small holes into a LED and use CA to glue the fibers to the LED?
Enjoy,
Matt

CA will eat at the FO strands.  I'd suggest using canopy glue, or epoxy.

Post by: Armandodlc on March 11, 2014, 03:53:25 pm
You can use CA glue as long as you hit it with Zip kicker immediately. Other options for lighting in tight spaces include SMDs. They are making them incredibly small now.

Post by: Mstowell on March 11, 2014, 04:49:23 pm
Thanks for the warning about the CA glue.
I think SMD might still be too tall. The space is pretty tight, and I have FO coming already. ;)
I think I have canopy glue already.
Would I be able to use hot melt glue gun, or would that be too hot and melt the fiber?
Matt

They have the pre-wired pin head size smd's on Boyd's channel video conf. last night. HDA is going to have them available soon.

Never tried hot glue before Matt.  You could experiment a bit and see what happens.  I like to use plain old inexpensive white glue myself.  Takes a day or so to dry but works very well.  You're gonna love the fibre optics!!! ;)  They are soooo cool!
Tanks are going to be cool! :)

Hi Guys,
I little slow progress this week.
Here's a pic of what I've been trying to figure out.
How to get the tiny stars on the tanks.
I think they turned out pretty good considering that the tanks are only about 1.5" long.
I decided to do the start when I found out that Sherman tanks often had stars on them.
Now that stars are on and tanks glued, I can do a little weathering.  Pic of that to follow.

Hi All,
I have gotten my lighting figured out.
Here are pics of progress on war machine.
A bit hard to see, but I used FO inserted into 2mm lighthouse LEDs to light the wing tips.
I still need to trim the FO to length and seal them up, but looking pretty good.
On to putting lights into other 2 ships!

Here is a picture of "leg" holes in bottom of ship.
I am extremely pleased with the way this turned out.
I was very unsure about how to mask the holes while I sprayed final coat of hull color.
I had heard the Elmer's worked well to mask, so I gave it a shot.
I cover holes, sprayed paint, then removed glue.
The technique worked perfectly.
Enjoy.

Hi All,
Here's an update.
Diorama base started.
I've built the box and used news print to add some hills.
(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l198/msstowell/DSC_0680_zps13efefb6.jpg) (http://s96.photobucket.com/user/msstowell/media/DSC_0680_zps13efefb6.jpg.html)
Then covered with plaster cloth.

Then added plaster of paris to fill in the holes in the plaster cloth
Then a base coat of brown.

On to the detail painting for next posting.
Enjoy,
Matt

The wood skewers are there to create spaces in plaster for the future brass tubes
that will support the ships and give me a place to run wires.

Hello All,
Small update.
I've never done a diorama like this before, so I spending a fair amount of time mulling it over in my head.
Here are a couple of photo of what I've got going on.
Still need to cover base with soil/grass and other terrain goodies.
I've got some soil underneath the tank.
The gray plastic are the ash bodies that represent the 3 men that got desintigrated at start of movie.
I'm still cleaning them up after cutting them out of the kit base.

Ash bodies extracted from kit base...

I've also gotten the terrain surface figured out.  Some thinned out Elmer's Glue, sand, and 2 colors of terrain from Woodland Scenics.
Works like a charm.  :)  Now just need to cover the rest of the base.

Ok, I have to ask...is that death beam included, or did you scratch build it? The diorama looks fantastic!

FYI, the kit only comes with 2 war machines.
I used 2 kits for diorama.
