Title: Projekt: Polish a turd - 1/537 USS Enterprise Refit by AMT (Modified)
Post by: MattA on February 28, 2014, 04:42:19 pm
Ohh-kay, folks!  We're here with one of the oddest kits in the Star Trek universe:  The 1/537 Refit!

It was designed waaaay back in the late 70's to coincide with the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and as such the fit isn't that great.

Later on, some genius thought it would be a GREAT idea to carve in some aztec panels into the mold!  And thus... the horrible texture on this kit was born.  This particular kit is the Star Trek VI re-release.  It comes with a giant oversized shuttle craft.  We'll see what we do with that.

What are my plans for this bad boy?  First and foremost, I would like to make this thing look decent.  Something that people will look at and say 'Nice Enterprise!'.  It needs to be durable.  No sagging pylons are necessary.  And yes, that paneling is being REMOVED.

This kit will be lit up (hopefully well), though I'm not going quite all out like a 1:350 kit.  I will also be ordering some bits from DLM to replace some of the inaccurate junk that came with the kit.

And finally... there may be a surprise or two.  Stay tuned!

And we're OFF!

Ha perfect title! I tried this kit as my getting back into phase a couple years back and I tossed it back in the closet. My rose-colored glasses from building this as a 7yr old quickly diminished.

Best of luck and I can't wait to see what you can do with this kit!

Well, I got very little modeling done over the weekend, but I did start experimenting with ways to remove the awful paneling all over the ship.

I first started with just sanding one section to see if it could be removed that way.  It can, but it also severely limits the detail that should be there.  I'm not sure that's a really good way to go.

I then tried filling all of it in.  This had much better success, though you have to rescribe all the panel lines.  I've made one pass with putty over 3/4 of the bottom saucer, sanded it all down, and primed.  You can still see some of the lines, though not nearly as much.  I'm going to hit it one more time, and that should be that.  I just have to do every surface of the ship now!  Piece of cake, right? :o

I'll post pictures when there's something to see...

Better to take it slow and steady and not rush it (which was my mistake this weekend). Also I've seen people do some nice smoothing using red Bondo on the surface then re scribing the lines they want to keep.

Well, Wolfy, I'm glad you asked!

I have been filling the bottom saucer as an experiment.  It's actually turning out better than expected.

Here's the saucer fully puttied and sanded with a light coat of primer.  It is fairly smooth, though not completely perfect.  I may leave the slight imperfections to give it some mild depth.

Here's a closer view of the saucer.  You can see that most of the brickwork is gone.

Matt, this is looking great man!  I know that you had to put in some work to even get it to this stage, but sheesh, it is looking fantastic already.  If you make quick work of the pylons, I am going to say that you need to redo the title of this thread; turd it is not!   ;)

Yes indeed!  I think I'm building up new muscle!

I had drilled out the new window ports on the saucer windows and filled the old ones.  I also glued them into the saucer:

I also drilled out all the windows and started working on the arboretum.  The windows on this kit don't exist, though they are marked.  I cut them out and made frames out of strip styrene:

This is just a quick update from last night...

I filled and sanded one half of the secondary hull and the dorsal.  I only have the other half of the secondary hull, the strong backs, both pylons, and the warp nacelles to fill/sand.

I've used one tube of squadron putty so far.  I have to swing by Hobby Town tomorrow to pick up some more.

By the way, to anyone who is thinking about doing this but is afraid that the filling is difficult, no worries.  It's actually pretty easy to do.  It's just work.  Yes, a smoothie would be a lot easier to work with, but for 1/10th the cost plus a few bucks in putty, and I'm there anyway.

I hope so!  I was enjoying your build!

More work on the secondary hull tonight:

I cut out the arboretum windows, put in frames using strip styrene, and puttied that side of the secondary hull.  I also glued in the strongbacks.  This kit has the strangest design I've seen in a model kit so far.  I hope I can build it up with some strength.  I don't want it falling apart later on.

Last night was pylon work.  I ran all wiring through the pylons and glued them both together.  I then attached one of the pylons to the secondary hull.

Let me tell you, the Polar Lights kits are far superior to this thing.  I had to use copious amounts of styrene glue, plus styrene strips inside the mount to get the first one mounted securely.  The second one should be similar.  This morning when I checked my progress, I found that the first pylon was very solid.  It doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

Once I get the second one mounted, I'll post photos. :D

Isn't that strong back area a complete travesty!   :o

Last night was pylon work.  I ran all wiring through the pylons and glued them both together.

I totally botched this process!   Thought I'd be smart and fish the wires through the pylons after they were glued together.  ::)  Big mistake!  Got there in the end, but defo did it the hard way.

You're making excellent progress on this Matt!!  Keep up the great work there!  :)

Yeah, Jeff, the strongback on this thing is a disaster.  The pylons suck too.  I can't believe they kept selling this kit for so long!

More progress... I've attached the second pylon.  If you were to just attach the pylons to the strongbacks and not pay attention, the warp nacelles would be totally messed up.  You have to be very careful and line them up carefully.

Doing this leaves a HUGE gap.  HUGE.  I've put several strips of styrene in to beef it up.  I'll have to wait for things to dry to see how they did.  Once that's all done, it'll be time to file things down and try to make everything look ok.

Did you reinforce the pylons at all? I've seen people use very thing brass tubing to make a jig. I just remember from my youth having to reglue pylons on because I accidentally brushed up against them and down it went. I also had no idea how to properly glue things either so there's that.

I didn't use any brass or pipe inside the pylons, but what I did do was liberally glue around the mating surfaces.  Once that had dried, I used styrene strips on the gaps and inside the mount point to beef things up.

Testors tube glue melts all the plastic together nicely, and this was no exception.  The pylons are extremely solid and won't be going anywhere.  If you try to pull on them, they bend the plastic on the secondary hull.  The mount points themselves don't move.   8)

I'm very excited!

Okay I feel better now! I just had flashbacks to the kid version of me trying to re-glue those things back on every year. Glad they are sturdy!

I'm actually very happy with how sturdy they are.  I'm hoping they last for the life of this model without any issues.

I've completed my modifications to the pylons.  The starboard side had a HUGE gap.  I've filled it in with styrene and filed it flush.  It's almost ready for smoothing and sanding.

I mocked up the ship today, and found that the size is still pretty impressive!  It's not quite as huge as the 350 scale, but it's still fairly large.  It's quite a bit larger than my 1:1400 Enterprise-D.  Yet another huge model to find a home for. :)

I suspect it may have some lean to it as well, though I haven't really looked hard to see.  If it does, I'll use liberal amounts of styrene glue and tweak the mounting point to the side.  Once it's where I want it, I'll just let it dry.

Or at least... that's the plan.  :o

I'm glad you guys are enjoying it!  I'm actually going to start lighting it here pretty quick.  I'm waiting on Don's Light and Magic to get some of the replacement parts to me.  That's when I'll really make some headway!

We've made more progress!

Lighting has been installed in the secondary hull.  It amazes me how models jump to life when lighting is worked in.

I drilled holes for the spotlights and angled them to hit the pylons.  I've also drilled out the holes for the nav lights and strobes, though they aren't installed yet.

I've also drilled and installed the spotlights on the neck.

Onward!

The project is currently on hold while I wait for parts from Don's Light and Magic.  I ordered them just over two weeks ago, and they haven't arrived yet.  I've got the new deflector housing, deflector dish, rec dec windows, impulse crystal, torpedo launcher, and a few other toys coming.  For now, I just have to wait until they get here.

My hat is off to you here Matt; you have been giving some play by play on this build up, and you are putting a lot of work into this.  It is paying off though, this is really shaping up nicely.  Everything this kit is throwing at you from left field you are sending right back at it, so keep it up sir!   8)

Thanks for the kind words!  I'm just trying to make this thing look decent without going all out.  I suppose I'm going a little more all out than I wanted to, but we'll make do. :)

My DLM parts have arrived!  They are of very good quality.  i'm quite happy with how they look.  Some pics:

I had to raise the bridge by 1mm to get the light to hit the hull, but it looks like it's gonna work!  I borrowed Garbaron's method again (Notice I said borrowed, Thorsten? :) )

I had to put the kit down for awhile, but now I'm getting rolling again.

Tonight, I installed the top strobe in the bridge.  And... uhh... well, that's it

I also connected up the Tenacontrols 1001-B board to check the flashing, and... it strobed!

I'll be getting on this a lot more over the coming weeks.  I'm currently awaiting more bits and bobs for it, and as soon as they're in we're going to town!

If you're talking about the pylon lights, I used my 1:350 refit as a template for where the spotlights go.  They look pretty good, so I must have done something right!

Believe me, the grid lines on the TOS kit are nothing compared to the travesty that is this kit.  The grid lines actually don't look that bad, where this looks like an abomination.  It's icky.

In other news, I continued wiring up the secondary hull today.  I've got about one more session to go before I can close it up.  I'm going to try to keep it and the saucer separate until I get further along in the build.

I also had the light in the bridge go out.  I was able to remove the bridge and pull out the light.  The ground wire was no longer attached.  Who knows what happened, but rather than bust the whole thing open, I was able to fish another ground wire through the hole in the B/C deck to the opening where the neck attaches.  Crisis averted!

Once the secondary hull is closed, I'll be puttying/sanding seams on it and the saucer.  Once I have a base coat of white on both, I'll put the warp nacelles together.

Piece of cake, right? ;)

Trust me... the 1:350 and 1:1000 are MILES better than this thing.  Unless you want to go through tubes of putty and have lots of swearing sessions, i'd stick with those and ignore the 1:537.

I'm mostly doing it as a challenge to see if I can... well... polish a turd! ;D

The polish job continues...

Last night, I checked over the saucer seam after puttying/sanding it.  It looked pretty good, though there were a few places that need touchup.  I touched them up with some putty and moved over to the secondary hull. I decided it was high time to give the 1701-A her deflector dish.

I've got the DLM replacement deflector housing and dish, but there's no backing to provide proper light diffusion for the blue LED.  I kept wondering what I was going to use for it when it hit me.  I also have a replacement part for the lower sensor dome.

I grabbed the kit part for the lower sensor dome, and discovered that it was roughly the right size to fit the opening behind the deflector.  I cut off the protruding end, drilled a hole in the center, and voila!  It seems to work pretty well.

I mounted a blue SMD in the center dome.  This concave section gave it a center 'hotspot' that the Enterprise has.  I covered the section with a piece of paper to provide proper diffusion, powered it up, and wow!  It looks right on the money!

The project marches on...

Tonight was light blocking on the saucer.  I had to clear away a bunch of the black paint on the inside to get a good seal using styrene glue, so it has to be blocked from the outside.  Black primer to the rescue!!

Tomorrow, I'll get some white primer down, then a base coat.  Once I've got it nice and white, we'll start assembling the ship.
Baby steps... :D

Well, after a well needed break from modeling, I got back in the saddle again today.  And guess what?  The secondary hull is CLOSED!

The neck is glued to the saucer, but not to the secondary hull.  In order to get the wiring to cooperate, I had to be a little creative.  The next time I do this, i'm going to tackle it differently.

Pay no attention to the messy work area... I was on a roll!

You do take time out every so often to talk smack about this scale of the refit Matt....  makes a body wonder why you started it.

In your experience, would you say all the 1/537 kits are junk? I imagine it's the same model over and over again in a different box?

I did build the original release when it first came out, and I do recall some fit/seam issues, but it's been a long time. I also recall though that I ended up with a pretty nice looking ship....   perhaps my eye wasn't quite as critical back then?

I think your build looks real good, Matt. I built a lighted (not well lit) version many years ago, which may have been this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/star-trek-model-the-wrath-of-khan-U-S-S-enterprise-must-see-/291158575945?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item43ca674b49.

I can't remember if it had the Aztec paneling in it or not, but I think it did. I remember a brick like texture to it. It was also very front heavy, and was constantly toppling forward unless I weighted the back of the secondary hull with rocks. Yes, rocks. Don't think the base was properly centered for the balance issues of the kit. The deflector dish was detachable to provide access to the battery pack, 2 D's I think. It all came tumbling down, literally, when one of my cats acquired the top of the bookshelf and knocked it off, breaking nacelles and other parts beyond fixing.

Like ImWolf said, I didn't have as critical an eye for fit issues and such, I just thought a lighted Enterprise would be cool.

I started this thing as a challenge to myself.  I wanted to see if I could build something nice out of it.  If I can make it look good, maybe I'm actually getting sorta good at this hobby? ;)

The original release of this kit (the smoothie) is highly sought after because it does not have the 'aztec' texture all over it.  That texture had to be filled all over the ship.  It took hours of filling and sanding just to make it look less ridiculous.  Whoever made the decision to do that basically ruined the mold forever.   ::)

Also, the way the kit fits together isn't very great.  The fitment of the pylons and neck are absolute crap.  Seriously, I had to build up the pylons with tons of styrene, fill gaps with styrene, and basically melt the joints together using copious amounts of styrene glue to keep it from falling apart.

Also, the kit is very very inaccurate.  The 1:350 replaced it for a reason.  I spent $50 on parts to make the kit more accurate, and I didn't even scratch the surface.

That said, it's turning out pretty decent so far, and I love the scale!  It's a great size for a bookshelf.  I think this one is going to look pretty good!  Hopefully I can push through this lull in modeling I've been having and finish it up.

One can't have too many refits after all!  ;D

I must recant my previous assumption about which kit I had. I did have the original smoothie, because I now remember the 'rainbow' decals on the nacelles. Got a look at the kit box on EBay and the memory kicked in. Still, I could swear that I remember panel lines, but maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me again. Must be remembering the normal hull section lines :-[

Yeah, having a smoothie would make the process go a lot quicker.  The non-smoothie version is a whole lot more pain, but it also can be had for a lot less money.  I think I paid around $15 for my kit, though I put a bunch of cash into aftermarket bits for it.

I hear you on the sanding of the 'aztecs'.  what a pain!

I think we'll both get it done.  It'll just take time.  I haven't worked on mine in about a week, but that's about to change again.  I need to get back on the aztecs and start on the warp nacelles.  I suspect that once the aztecs are all down, this thing is going to get finished up quick!

I just bought his accurizing kit. It was around $40. I didn't think that was too bad. You'll never make this one look great, but it can be a reasonably decent version after some time, work, and accurizing parts.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Matt what is your plan with the lighting of the impulse engine?

The impulse engine actually turned out really great.  I carefully masked the front and back of the actual engines and then light blocked the rest of the impulse engine part. Once that was done, I placed two red LEDs inside and surrounded them with a bit of cotton for diffusion. The result is a nice red glow right where I want it that glows through the white plastic.

I'm pretty sure that the decal set you can get online on starshipmodeler.com includes impulse grilles. If not, I'll see if HDAModelworx can make some for me. :)

Hope this helps...

Ok, more progress...

I have completed the aztecing on the pylons and the neck/torpedo deck.  I had to do some light blocking on the secondary hull.  There was a whole bunch of light bleed coming through, but things are looking good now.

Nope, that's the DLM deflector and deflector housing.  I spent the $40 to get some of the replacement bits for the model (sensor dome, bridge, deflector, bussards, etc).  I felt it was a good investment to make the kit a bit closer to the real deal.

Thanks, Pirate! :D

I'm purposely going to make the windows clouded over so you can't see in.  I didn't want to be scratch building the arboretum/officers lounge considering I was on a schedule (though that's been blown!).  I'm not too concerned with the interior sets on this kit anyway.  This one is mostly just the challenge of making the AMT kit look decent.  If I can do that, I can do anything! ;D

The only new news to report on this is that I've filled all the 'aztec' tilework on the warp nacelles.  The lights have been installed in one of them.

Once I get them installed and light blocked, putty and paint will follow.  Once they're nice and smooth, I'll glue them to the pylons (and straighten them out!).  I can then mask and paint the aztec pattern on them.

I also glued on the mounting pole.  The hole in the bottom is huge, so I used the other half of the 5/8" pole I used for the 1:350 refit.  It should work nicely.

Pictures will be on their way as soon as I get a little bit further along.

Thanks for the kind words!  I've enjoyed some of the challenge, but if you're looking for a nice Enterprise, the 1:350 kit is LOADS better with way less nightmare involved.  It's larger, sure, but wow is it better engineered.

I've started working on getting some sort of base worked out for the kit.  I have some unfinished bases that Wolf359 gave me out in Houston, and I think one of them may work great for this.

I've also gotten one of the warp nacelles closed and puttied.  It needs a ton of sanding, then paint before I can attach it.

The other nacelle has light blocking where the LEDs go, but I haven't installed anything yet.

Some pics of the E on the base:

Well, this thread has been on quite the hiatus!

As it turns out, I had put this kit down for several reasons.  The first of which was my paint work was just not turning out the way I wanted.  Between having to fill the aztec grids in and having to put the paint on thick, the model was starting to look very ameteurish.  The real problem came when I tried to attach the nacelles.  I thought I could soften up the plastic and get the nacelles evened out, but they're tipped in too far.  When I went to correct the problem, it just opened up more problems.

In essence... this project is DEAD.

BUT!  Like all good things, it can't stay dead!  I've just ordered another kit on ebay (Star Trek IV version), and I'm going to start this one over.  I'm going to steal some of my correction parts and lighting from the first kit and build up the second one properly.  We'll see if we can make this thing work after all.

I think part of the problem was trying to fill in the 'aztec' pattern.  It's so much work to get it right that it sucks the fun right out of it.  I think I'm actually going to leave it.  It was suggested to me to use some high build primer to reduce  them some, and I think that might be a wise move.  I'm also not going to paint the aztecs on this one.  I thought it would be neat to do so, but it was turning out to be kinda painful to get the paintwork to come out right.  I'll be using the free aztec decals on starshipmodeler to get the pattern on there.

We'll get the thread updating when it arrives!

Yes.  I enjoy pain.  Bring on the plastic!

One thing I noticed about the kit I just won, it's from the 20th anniversary of Star Trek (1986).  That's going on 29 years ago!  I was 11 or 12 when this kit was first sold, and it's still shrink wrapped!  That's pretty darned neat!

Way to go Matt! I just won an auction for a Star Trek VI version of the 1/537 just last week. It was weird because I was the only bidder, and I had been bidding on some others and was out bid by the auto bidders. It's still sealed in the box with just a bit of crimping on the edge of the box. Should get it tomorrow. This would kind of replace the one my cat(s) destroyed a few years back.

@fumblethumbs
That's alright FT, I know it's not the Mona Lisa of kits. I built one several years ago with grain of wheat bulb lighting, and it turned out OK. Admittedly I wasn't worried about the screen accuracy when I built , but my biggest gripe with it was the balance issue that all of these Enterprise kits have. They weren't meant to operate in gravity, after all, despite what J.J. Abrams seems to think.

@Matt, did you get yours yet?

@fumbles:  I think the idea behind this kit is just build it.  Warts and all.  Any attempt at making it better is going to be met with massive failure.

I'm going to keep the stupid aztec lines this time.  Trying to fill them really made the kit look shabby.  I'll use some high build primer this time, then prime and use pearl white.  I was trying to paint on the aztecs, but they wound up looking weird with all the 'aztec' paneling.  I think I'll use the free decals from starshipmodeler instead.

If I ever build a smoothie, it'll be a different story, however. :)

@fumbles:  I think the idea behind this kit is just build it.  Warts and all.

Yep, You are so right Matt!  That's exactly the M.O. I'm using since pulling the kit back out of storage. ;)

One thing that really kicked my butt, (well, one of several things really, but I digress), was I didn't light block the primary and secondary hulls from the inside.  This has really been a nuisance.  The sprayed on primer and paint coats don't seem to build in those deep crevices between the Aztecs.  I've had to hand brush black into them to kill light bleed.  A very time consuming and tedious procedure.  All the best to you Matt and Dan on your builds!!  :)

Edit:  That's the very kit I started out with Dan.  Seeing that box again  (tick, wink, shrug)
sure brings back memories (tick, wink, shrug)

Been going over this one time and time again for reference for my own build that I have just started on the 1/537 "Smoothie" and I have just sent a wee pm.

Totally going to borrow your arboretum window idea if that's OK as I was wondering how to do that.

All I did was cut out the arboretum window section with my dremel, and cut and paste some strip styrene for the window frames.  It looks pretty good, though not perfect.  I'm not going to put an arboretum in my 537, though, as it's just too small to really get in there and see.

Good luck, Iain!

Thanks Matt!

Definitely going to cut out the windows. I have some gorgeous arboretum decals from both Jerry/HDA and on the JT Graphic decals I have and it would such a waste not to use them. Will use the black set to get the proportions/size right and my plan at the mo is to mount the decals I will eventually use onto some PETG styrene and hopefully the light inside the secondary hull will be enough to backlight them. All I would do then is fill the windows in with some Krystal clear!

BTW Mat - thanks for your PM.
