Title: [ooVoo Video Chat] How To Block Ads
Post by: Gadgetron_3000 on May 06, 2014, 02:44:11 am
For the TrekWorks Hangouts, Boyd has now switched from using Google+ Hangouts to an application called ooVoo.

On the PC and Mac, ooVoo supports the free, non-premium version of its application by having advertisements stream into most of the main windows.  Here are some examples:

These ads can be a bit annoying to look at which take away from the call/chat experience.  But there is a way to make a change so that the ads don't appear.  For Microsoft Windows users, just follow the steps below:

1. Ensure that the ooVoo application is not launched.  If it is, log out and exit the application completely.

2. Find 'Notepad' from the Start Menu (Windows XP, Vista, & Windows 7) or from the Search Charms Bar (Windows 8 ).  Right-click over 'Notepad' and select 'Run as administrator.'

3. At the 'User Account Control' window, select the 'Yes' button.  Notepad should launch afterwards.

4. Select 'File' from the Notepad command bar and choose 'Open...' from the drop-down menu.

5. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory.

6. At the lower-right section of the 'Open' window, click the 'Text Documents (*.txt)' button.  Select 'All Files (*.*)' from the drop-down menu.

7. You should now see several files appear in the directory listing.  Open the 'hosts' file.

8. Add '127.0.0.1 www3.oovoo.com' to the end of the file.

9. Select 'File' from the Notepad command bar and choose 'Save' from the drop-down menu.

10. Select 'File' from the Notepad command bar and choose 'Exit' from the drop-down menu.

11. Launch ooVoo again.  You should now notice that the advertisements do not appear.

If you are running ooVoo through an Apple Mac system, it has a version of the 'hosts' file as well that the same type of edited change can be made.  You will need to search on how to access that file, but it shouldn't be that hard to do.

If you have any questions, let me know.  Enjoy!
