Title: Help with NX-01 fiber optic detail
Post by: NMSquirrel on November 29, 2014, 09:35:19 am
anybody know of any details as far as fiber optic placement and drilling guides for the nx-01?
and I seem to be missing the smaller nav LEDs, the ones behind the flashing red and green, what size LED's are they?
(LED details are not as critical but it still would be appreciated..)

Are you guys still working on the NX? I'm still in the paint phase and would love to have this info before I get into the buying phase of lighting...
Thanks

Meh..they did not shine as expected.. I ended up coloring them..
http://scifimodelaction.com/sfmaforum/index.php?topic=3294.0
the small ones around the saucer came out excellent, some got hidden during painting puttying and touching up, I had used ca glue  to start off with, so a couple broke inside, I had found that shrink wrap tubing is the best to use for light blocking fibers(and attaching FO to led, just be extra careful not to let it heat up too much, it will melt FO), paint rubs off, and when you are running a red FO and white bleeds through, it isn't as red as the others..(more pink)

one more thing I learned lighting this one..
INDIRECT LIGHT!!
don't point yur LEDs directly at what you want to light up whenever possible, otherwise use a diffuser (cotton is not a very good diffuser..)

Thanks...did you like this build?

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sure I'll be asking more questions in the future!

overall, yes, loved it, learned lots of things..
I am still struggling with whether I want to build another NX (contest worthy at least, resale value at most) or go with an X-wing for my next model..
(star wars seems more chances I would actually sell one)

(oh, and pay attention when ordering LED's that they are all opaque, I had ordered half opaque and half clear lenses, the clear ones don't look right)
one of my LEDs burned out, I repaired it with a SMD and a piece of LED dome I cut off another burnt out LED, if the wires were a couple inches longer, I could have hidden them really easy on the outside of the ship, instead of having to splice outside the ship..
