Title: 1/1000 Andromeda
Post by: Madhatter on September 25, 2017, 08:09:50 am
Throughout the Yunagi build I have been alluding to the Andromeda which to some will be interesting in itself as it is the latest incarnation of the UNCF Flagship - essentially pushing the Yamato out of the way with its twin wave guns and more advanced technology. If I have understood it right, the Andromeda even shares some Gamillian technology after the joining up of the two previous enemies to fight off another group even more deadly than themselves - the Gatlantis

At any rate, there was a lot of buzz amongst the SBY fans when it was announced that this:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4380/36421259774_cf9c1991dd.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XuqtCJ)

.... was coming out and if I am totally honest - I wasn't one of them. I don't particularly like the bridge section and I think it needs a better exhaust nozzle and some bigger and better fins. The rest of it is pretty cool though and I thought I could do something with the rest of it, but so far, it hasn't quite worked out as planned. More on this later

This kit comes prepackaged with lights and even a sound board but combined, they make it more toy like than a model - in the same way Revell do their Star Wars toys "models"

I have elected not to use the lights or sound board and make do with my own lights. I probably should use the Wave gun lights but I just can't be bothered. I'd never use it and as it is, I hardly ever display the ships I have built with the lights turned on. Only at shows do they get switched on and that is pretty rare

However, I do have some lights planned for this because my OCD kicks in every chance it can and I just can't help myself. Besides, it does add just a little extra something to a build.

I am planning on adding 3-4 ships to a display: the Andromeda, Yunagi, a Dreadnought and a medical ship. I should get myself a 1/1000 Yamato to fly alongside as well.....

I mentioned that things hadn't worked out as planned with the updated exhaust, so here's a quick look at an early failure. Because I never fully trust myself to do a proper job the first time round and I am scared I'll just completely root a valuable and core piece or equipment, I make resin copies to experiment with. At first, I had the pour points in the wrong place and I wasn't getting very good results. but with the purchase of some more silicon, I remolded the exhaust and managed (after many attempts) to make a couple of decent resin copies - and even then only 1 that was totally workable. I had made 16 individual petals as well in the design of the SBY Live Action movie and spent age measuring and drawing to get the shapes right. Last time I attempted this design, I tried to cheat and make some resin copies but that didn't work out so well and I stuck with the kit version. However, I thought I would give it another go this time but make each and every petal individually. All 16 of them. They were all uniform (mostly) and made using very thin plastic sheet which is no longer in production sadly. Good thing I bought heaps when I did. Anyway, I was pretty chuffed with myself and then after successfully creating a good solid copy I proceeded to start sticking on the petals. Well guess what? I screwed up my measurements and they didn't all fit on. This became a prime reason why I make resin copies first and foremost!!

I have put the nozzle idea aside for now and will look at it again when I get back from my up coming mini-holiday. However, you can see how cool it could look and I think I will amend the design a bit to.

Moving along now to the side thrusters. I have cut out the space in between the forward facing fins in order to facilitate a cool lighting effect I saw on a huge one built by a Japanese fellow (his one was 1 meter long!). Even though it's not technically show accurate, I just don't care and want to use this effect for myself.  A bit of cutting here and there allows the transfer of wiring into the main body. Luckily, it was easy enough to make it work due to the way Bandai engineer these kits. The pictures should be self explanatory enough but if not, please feel free to ask anything.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4427/36481636494_eefbd4335e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XzKVwE)

So, that is where I am up to right now. It doesn't seem like much but I spent wayyyy to much time screwing up making the exhaust nozzle and fins. Once I get back form my trip, I will be able to invest more time into this. I also have to finish off the Yunagi but there isn't much left of that one.

As always, thanks for looking

I have Bandai's legacy Andromeda model kit that comes with the wires and lights. It cost me only about 1200 yen a couple of years ago. It comes with those grain of wheat bulbs, but my intent was to light it with LEDs and add lights to the side windows, bridge, and to add strobing nav lights.

I don't think the lighting on the Yamato Bandai kits make them look toy-like, however I have never seen them in-person. The Revell Build&Play Star Wars kits are certainly toy-like, I agree.

A bit more work done on the main engine. I managed to squeeze 13 3MM LEDs onto a disc 2 cm diameter which took a couple of hours, but the results are well worth it. It all fits nicely inside the clear insert and is markedly brighter than what you get in the kit supplied lighting. I'm going to paint some clear plastic with some Alclad metal to see if I can get the lights shining nicely behind it to show through. Only so it doesn't look like a clear part is all.

I also remade the plastic part that sits behind the nozzle and still have more to add to it yet.

Here's a few pics:

Si,

So this is another in the fleet?! Outstanding!

Your builds are very cool to watch and, while watching, I realize how much I have to learn!

Keep going! I can't wait to see the finished display!

thanks for the kind posts of encouragement guys
Yes, it's not the cheapest kit out there but I got it at a really good price which is the only reason why I bought it
I will hopefully have an update for you this weekend but I am still working on the nozzle, so maybe there won't be much to show.
As always, thanks for looking

Great work on the lights so far Si, is there any functionality on the large circle of LEDs, seems a lot of LEDS just to light up the engine?

I could always do you a twin version of the Yamato Wave gun controller if you decide to add them!!

Looking through the Yamato 2199 kits I've just ordered the 1/1000 Pormelia Class Astro Assault Carrier after being inspired by your builds and the intention is to do something with the lights round the underside!

Keep up the good work.

Hey Warren! Great to see you
Mate, no functionality for the rear lights unfortunately - although the though did cross my mind to have them run in the same circular pattern as the Yamato  ;)
I will get back to you on the wave gun idea but I might well be up for it. The only thing I would change is to have a brighter light for the final bit of the firing sequence.
I'll email you when I know more

I bet you all thought this thread was dead but alas, it still lives!
I just haven't updated it for a while.
Here's where I am currently up to:
The updated nozzle has been finished and attached. I experimented with success by painting the inner part with Alclad. The Alclad is still translucent and lets the light out but when it's switched off, it doersn't look like a clear part!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/39367782762_a5db2743d6_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22YNbgd)

There is a plastic ring to hide the LED heads as well:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/38519976895_571653a627_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21FSX7F)

And finished:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4732/38587416285_7f3c1990a7_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21MQAuM)

Still a way to go yet but I am getting there slowly. I've done a small amount of detailing up top but nothing picture worthy as yet
Thanks for looking

Hi guys

Time for a mini update. Sorry it's taken so long to show anything but I haven't had a lot of build time lately.

Here's what I have done so far. I have begun to detail the top plate and that's pretty much all done now - just need to install it which I will do later once the super structure is done. I'll be starting on that piece tonight hopefully.

Aft end:

Looking forward:

Start of the surface details:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4722/28175186959_ef740982b8_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JVKctv)

Underneath - which as you'll see had a slight issue with deformed engine bells and there is zero I can do about it:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4608/25106942637_1545c124aa_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/EfBDkk)

And finally, a full lighting test (just to make sure I haven't screwed something up as usual):

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4755/26105079898_58dab993e4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FLPmLs)

So, that's all I have for now but it's all coming along nicely now and I am hoping to have this done in the next few weeks ready for Expo

As always, thanks for looking in

Looking forward to seeing this completed! :)

Is this perhaps related to the spaceship Yamato, or is this a different story world?

Been wondering if I should consider getting the Yamato some time in the future, as I watched some of the cartoon episodes as a kid.

thanks man. I'm looking forward to seeing the completion as well as I have other projects I want to attend to   ;D

Yeah, the Andromeda is part of the Space Battleship Yamato 2202 series. It's the UNCF (ex-EDF) flagship
I got hooked on the updated 2199 series when I saw these kits get released. I knew nothing about it until a fellow on another site got me onto it in a big way. I think its a great series and the animation is amazing. I am yet to see the 2202  series though but will be finding time soon to watch it

wow - it's been a long time since I last updated this build thread but then I haven't been working on it much due to other commitments/builds. However, I am aiming to get this done for Expo in June, so I have picked it up again in the hope of just getting it done. I've also picked up the Garmillas set 2 and 3 and I am chomping at the bit to start set 3 as it has the best looking ship of the Garmilla fleet in my opinion. I'll consider doing a WIP thread for that one when I start it

Back to the Andromeda, all the lighting is installed and working and now it's time to finish off the surface detailing. I haven't lit the Wave Gun because I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle. I lit the Yamato WG and I can count how many times i have used it on one hand since it was finished.

Surprisingly, I have had to use a fair amount of putty to fill in the gaps. Thank goodness for the Perfect Plastic Putty product as it cleans up with water and cotton buds really easily.

Its a great product and I highly recommend it.

Time for some pics

Well, that's all for now. Hopefully, the next update will either be the last one or the finished item. I'm looking to do a fleet display with this , the Yunagi and also a destroyer. Maybe even a Garmilla ship too.

Thanks for looking

Si, I was gonna build a 1/500 Yamato here, but, after seeing your Jedi Level builds and posts, I'm not so sure! :)

Maybe I will build it but only show fuzzy pics! :D

This build, as per your usual, it awesome and inspirational! Makes me wanna build better! Love the greeblies you added and the clean pics.

Do you have a photobooth? What is your photographic equipment of choice?

Steady as she goes!

thanks Steve - your very kind. I'm no Jedi though - just an ordinary guy who's probably a bit OCD  ;D

You should definitely build the Yamato!! It's a great kit and if you want to go the whole lighting hog, you should ask Warren (AKA Madmonk) if he can do the lighting set for you as he did for me - it's a work of art!

I can be anal retentive when it comes to pictures. All too many times I've seen a great build which is marred by crappy, hastily taken pics which are blurred, either over or under exposed and just outright poorly lit. I know not everyone has access to a DSLR etc but these days you don't even need one. A Galaxy or an iPhone can take a great shot. It doesn't take a lot of effort to get a good shot and one that's in focus.
I personally don't have a photo booth - I just use white card on a flat surface in good light (usually taken outside when possible). I use a Canon EOS500D with a Canon 24-70mm Lens (the one with a red band on it) and a tripod. The camera is usually set to F22 to get the highest depth of field possible and for most shoots, the ISO is around 800 (light dependent).
One tip I picked up a few years ago to ensure a good in focus shot when you don't have a release cable is to use the 2 second timer (works on a phone too if it has that feature). Press it and move your hand away and hey presto - you get no lens shake at all and a nice clear image afterwards.
I hope some of the above helps in some way (sorry for the rant)
Thanks again for the compliment Steve

I had the camera out today so I thought I'd snap a few pics of where I am with the Andromeda. It's almost ready for paint. I just need to add some details to the bottom and then it's all ready for painting.

I'm pretty happy with how it's coming out. I know some people don't like 'borgifying' clean lines, but that's OK.

thanks guys  :)

I love these kits - they are so easy to put together and light and they look cool. I'll be starting the Garmillian winged cruiser form Set #3 soon which I'll do a WIP for as it's one of my favourite designs. I'll include the UX-01 Sub as well in the thread as it's quite a unique design. I didn't like it at first but it's really grown on me.
The Andromeda goes into the paint shop tomorrow so  it's not far from the end. I still have to make a base for it and the Yuunagi

Thanks for the interest guys.

Well, she's pretty much done now. I am still working on the base which will house 3 ships for now with room for a Dreadnought later on
I'm not going to weather it much now as I like it the way it is
I'll take some lit shots later on and post them up hopefully tonight

That is just freakin' gorgeous/awesome.

I was going to get one of these myself but no way could I make it as good as this one.

Si, what he said!!!  :o :o :o :o :o

This is just, like, "WOW!"

Did you light this?! That would be AWESOME! If you didn't, it's still beautiful!

Just in case I missed it, how did you get the metal effect on the engine nozzles? Nicely done, BTW!

So, What's next on the bench - the Dreadnought?!

Again, Well Done!

Thanks Guys- your feed back is always welcome :)
Steve, the nozzle is painted in Alclad which are (IMO) the best metallic paints around

Well, here are the lit shots. I had a minor emergency with this as I couldn't get the lights to work. I had to break it open to get inside to see what was wrong. As it turned out, the main power lead hadn't been soldered on properly and it had come off completely. As a result of not doing things right the first time, I now have to replace a missing greebly from the back end and fabricate one of those little sensors from one of the rear guns. Fixed the lighting though!

That's all I have sorry. I did take more but they weren't worth showing.

Once I have my fleet base all done I'll include some pictures of that too

Thanks very much for stopping by and having a look

So very beautiful. Wow. You made this look way better than the lighting kit that comes with it. (Makes me wish they'd release a scaled-down version of this kit without the lighitng kit.)

Si, I was gonna build a 1/500 Yamato here, but, after seeing your Jedi Level builds and posts, I'm not so sure! :)
Steve, after your NSE Protector, you could definitely do a Yamato. I've got the 1:1000 scale 2199 Yamato (the first one) that I've been considering getting started on.

greg, thanks! I know I will probably be asking Si ALOT of questions about my build - when I get to it in a couple of years! :D

Thanks again, Si!

DAMN YOU!!! I want to stop everything I am working on and go do Star Blazers. :(  AMAZING LOVE IT AWESOME!!!!!!  I would never have thought about doing models in this range, but I am WRONG, I will now dream about doing some of these in the future.  Wow, AMAZING!!!  Love it.

thank you guys!
I like these ship designs - some more than others of course, but in general, they're quite cool. They're a nice change to the conventional SW or ST ships although I do still like those too
Bandai did a great job of these kits and are easy to light. You have to cut away some of the internal bracing but its easy to do and doesn't affect the structure of the hull.
Thanks again for your interest guys

BTW/Out of Curiosity.

Have you seen the life action version of Space Battleship Yamato?

I have it on DVD  ;D The acting is a bit off but the CGI is amazing. I love the earth ship designs, especially the opening scene ship. The Garmilla ships aren't anything like the 2199 ships which has its good and bad points
Worth a watch of you haven't seen it.

I have indeed seen it. Been meaning to add it to my collection at some point - love the Yamato launch sequence. ;D

the nozzle I made for the Andromeda is based on the live action version. It's way more interesting than the stock version with those stupid little fins coming out the sides.

This is really beautiful work.  Unfortunately I chipped a tooth when my jaw bounced off the desk upon first viewing the final product.

Very nice!
