Title: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project
Post by: Madhatter on July 31, 2018, 08:52:24 am
Hi everyone

Well, time to bite the bullet and start on the "smaller" of the 2 Star Destroyers I have in my stash (well really, the Bandai mini SD's are the smallest I have but they are not ones I am going to detail). The bigger one is the Korbanth Super Star Destroyer which measures out to be about a meter or so long! The Bandai ones are to go with the SSD. I will build the monster one day but I want to tackle the one that requires the least amount of work first. I'll have to clear some room on my display shelf even for the standard SD but I think this will be worth it.

This kit needs no introduction as there have been a multitude of these built online. I bought this ages ago but just haven't had the mojo to put in the effort it deserves.

I will be adding details and of course lighting (which goes without saying really). To go with this kit, I have the Falcon 3D printed hangar bay, rubbish chute, shield generators and engine bells - all of which are beautifully made and smooth as a babies behind. I might even go to Shapeways and order a set of gun turrets too.

No pictures as yet as I have only just started but I'll add some soon enough.

As always, your feedback will be welcomed throughout the build - good or bad. If something looks wrong, say something. As nice as it is, I don't always need a "good job" and constructive critique is a good way to learn and be a better modeller.

I will be starting with the engine block and have already removed the smaller molded on piping as they don't connect to the parts that they're meant to. It just looks weird

See you all again soon

Me too!

If only for your new icon! ;)

And the build!

There seems to be several after market products for this kit now. :)

It isn't clear to me what I would chose, though I know there are both photo etch and resin (I think) for the hangar. If I were rich i would at least get the nice large thruster casings I've seen, but I think I will use the default ones myself when I get around to it.
Title: Re: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project
Post by: Madhatter on August 03, 2018, 05:50:27 am
Thanks for the interest guys.
I'm looking to do a few mods to the engine casings and add some inserts to the walls. You won't see much of them once the bells go on but you and I will know they're there ;)
There will be more added piping etc as well. They are a bit bare but still infinitely better than the AMT offering.
The back end is the part I'm most excited about doing. The side walls will also benefit from some extra shelves etc

Me too!
If only for your new icon! ;)
And the build!

LOL - yeah - I quite like that one myself to. It's very addictive in a sad kind of way

Update #1 - playing with the back end

So this is what Zvezda give you in terms of detail OOB

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/929/43222560564_697814779a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28RqVps)

Nothing wrong with that at all. Once those bells go on, you don't see much unless you're looking

I removed the molded on pipes in the middle here because they don't even meet up to the parts at the end. They seem pointless and half done, which on a ship this size is noticeable

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1798/43036393935_16031e2476_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28yYLxZ)

Now here's what I've added to the surfaces (bear in mind I have only just started and there is a LOT more to do yet! I am just winging these details BTW)

The white bits are all cast resin pieces of bits I use a lot of

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/851/30072652598_72489a71b1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MPqcUj)

As you can see in those last 2 pics, I've gone outside what is on the filming model and added an insert to make things a little more interesting. I'll be adding some pipes going in later

Anyways, I'll update again once I've finished the other sides which will be a while away as I only build 3 nights a week

Thanks for stopping in and having a look

Love it, what do you use to bend your small copper pipes with out collapsing the wall?
Title: Re: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project

Just a pair of rounded pliers. Its all brass rod, not tube so no worries about bending the walls in  ;D

Looks amazing and you have only just started.

I have another two of these myself with one for me and one to get built up and sold on the UK Garrison forums so I am going to pinch all your ideas for both as this just raises this kit to another level.

Mad by name, Mad by nature!!

Great to see you giving this your normal upgrade!!

As for only building 3 nights a week, what a luxury! I struggle with 3 a month!

Keep it up Si.

I guess I shouldn't be facetious about building 3 nights a week when some of you get that a month or even 2 I dare say.  ::)  ;D

Si, as always, your models are astonishing in their complexity and detail!

How did you attach the rods to the bell housings of the engines? Our are they simply placed there and the glue is on the hull?

Nice job and I still love your photography skills.

Keep going!

Steve

thanks guys - sorry for the late reply
Steve, the brass rods are just filed flat and glued against the surfaces with a tiny drop of CA.
I've made a start on the other side and it mirrors (mostly) the other.
I ended up replacing the center pipes (you know - the 4 each side ones?) with brass rod and it looks so much better. I'll shoot some snaps hopefully soon once I've done more worth showing  ;D

Update #2 - almost done with the back end

So, most of the piping has been added and I am happy with how it's coming along. I am still going to add a few more closer to the central leading edge just to busy that up a little more but it won't be a lot.

I drilled out the ends of the engines ready for the lighting to go in. I won't add that until after painting.

I won't talk much and let the pictures tell you what I've done

Thanks Dave

Yes, I have seen Dirk's build on SSM and have commented on it a few times. It's a fantastic build and nicely detailed.
As for the brass rods, I buy packs of the K & S brass of various sizes which have anywhere from 3-5 rods in it. It's all formed using jeweller's pliers which I re-appropriated from the wife many years ago. It's been an invaluable tool ever since! :)

How to paint all the intricate pipes? Handpaint them with a brush to hide the brass and then airbrush it all with the same color?

Well, I've done all the detailing that I'm going to do to the back end. I'll be base painting it all black etc shortly and then onto getting the lighting sorted out. I'm not sure which colours I should go for. Ice blue or white for the main thrusters? Warm white for the smaller ones as well.

Si, every time I see one of your posts, I become so envious of your skill and modeling prowess!

You are the Master! (Granted, one of the many here on this site; but still a Master!)

When you say "ice blue or white" for some of the engines, what do you mean? I mean, I thought the engines where all blue, white-blue. Is there a difference?

Just curious. Student asking questions here.

Keep going!

Steve
Title: Re: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project
Post by: Madhatter on August 30, 2018, 02:42:33 am
Thanks Steve - you're way too kind
Essentially, "Ice Blue" is just a cooler shade of blue. It looks a more like Aqua or Turquoise . They're for the 3 main thrusters and then I'll use standard White LED's for the 4 sub thrusters (I actually really don't know what they're called but that's the term I have prescribed for them and I'm sticking to it  ;) )

I've been asked a couple of times on another forum if I could take some shots with something recognisable for scale, so I just took a couple of pictures with a Tamiya Glue Bottle in front. It's not a small ship like usual - this one's definitely bigger than the Yunagi!! I can lay 2 of them, 1 over each side of that back end alone

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1870/29423430777_4850f5cbf7_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LQ3LSD)

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1843/42551179260_770aa9693e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27Q6V8J)

As you can see, it's got some paint on it and it looks much more tied together now. I think I got the colour right too!

Anyways, I've started on the bridge and I shall have pics of that hopefully this weekend
I hope the pictures give you a better sense of scale.?

Thanks Dave :)

Time for an update

I've started the bridge and have pretty much finished the face. I may yet go back and add a couple more bits on for good measure.

I have most of the holes drilled ready for fibers to go in.

I've also made a start on the roof section. It's a little bland for my taste so I've started adding details there to. Again, all made up stuff - no references. It just makes it look more interesting

Yeah, I'll run a light wash over some parts to give them depth but nothing to spectacular. I'm concerned that any overly dark wash may throw out the scale a bit too so I'll have to use a light wash. I think dark gray would work OK

I glued in the lights last night. I just have to wire them up now which won't be too hard. I haven't even tested them yet but they'll be fine
See you again soon

Work continues with the completion of the roof. I'll have the big X thingy standing up I think. I need to start detailing that part and then add it to the roof. The shield generators have been added since these pictures but I need to fix up a few things  before I can show you.

Si, you are the King of detailing and greeblies!

I really want to learn how you bend those wires without kinks. Nice job on the piping!

Keep going and keep astounding!

Thanks Steve - your very kind. I also get the odd kink but its all about putting the pliers in the right spot. There will always be a degree of indentation no matter what method or device you use.

Thought I would show you where I am up to on this before I go on a well deserved holiday for a few weeks.

I've only really just started but it's not a race. I probably won't take any more pics now until the bridge is finished

Hopefully the cutting board will help some of you convey a sense of scale as well

The first set of pics are the walls for the bays underneath which are present on the filming models. I thought that was a cool feature so I did the same, except I opened up another one that wasn't there. All for my own personal tastes

Loving this build! Together with Iain's I reckon I have a good chance of making mine look not too bad!

Can I please ask where those little resin greeblies came from?

Are they just spares from other kits?

Thanks!
Title: Re: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project
Post by: Madhatter on November 12, 2018, 07:12:15 pm
sorry for the delay in answering your question Quarky. I cast the resin pieces from ship part sets that I use a lot of - mostly the Pitroad sets 1 > 4. It's infinitely cheaper than buying these sets all the time :)

************

It's been a while since I last updated this thread, so time to do so. I have finished detailing the bridge and am about ready to start adding the fiber optic threads and then get it all sealed up.

The main hangar bay has also been started. I have used a mix of Green Strawberry PE and Falcon resin parts as well as some strip styrene here and there, with more to go in due course. The front hangar bay is the GS PE set and looks good. It's all lit, painted and ready to install

So, less talking and more pics I say

Starting with the hangar bays:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1937/31612108638_449aa83856_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QasjxQ)

I will try to meld the TIE fighter bay to the Falcon hangar section but it may not work do well. If not, I will need to scratch build it. I had a heck of a time mounting the SMD's as the wires kept coming off. They are not the best quality SMD's I think

Lastly, the bridge detailing is all but done. I won't be adding anything further to it. Once the paint goes on, it'll look much better and not so busy

Feel free to comment, critique or suggest

Thanks for stopping in and looking

I hate you! :(

Just because it makes my two look so crappy in comparison so when I start a third one in a couple of months I am going to totally pinch all your ideas in an effort to come anywhere close to what you have achieved with this build. My first one was for a charity auction and it was essentially a straight out of the box build as none of the PE/3D parts had been thought of yet and it went for 1400GBP so lord knows what price it would have commanded if it had anything approaching the level of detail your build has.

LOL - no worries mate - steal away  ;D
I thought your build that you did the thread on was awesome. Obviously others thought so as well if it got 1400 quid for it!
I won't lie, I had to do 2 side projects to stop myself from burning out on this one. I sometimes wonder if I have gone a little too OTT with the detailing, but I soon get over it and chug along some more

This is.....AWESOME!
Please don't stop with this insane amount of detail. This is fantastic.
Take breaks but dont stop. Coming from someone who is always going overboard and usually beyond my abilities but that's how we get better Right?

Thanks mate  :) . Don't worry - I won't be stopping it. I have invested too much time and money into it so far t give up on it I sometimes think I've bitten off more than I can chew, but I dare say most modellers go through that phase at some point during a complex build.
Your quite right when you say that doing more than what you think your abilities are used too can make you better. I started off with my first detailing project after seeing Yatasith's Venator. I had never scratch built or detailed anything up until that point and now I am glad I did it, otherwise I'd still be doing most things OOB - which could also be considered a curse in some respects :)

Ah thanks for that Dave. It's a lot cleaner than I had in my head I'll be honest :)

I did a lighting test tonight of the bridge and I am happy with how it turned out. I made a number of mistakes on the internals and had numerous electrical issues but I got there in the end.

2 days back and I have already pretty much finished the bridge and neck section. I'll run a light grey wash over it once everything has dried and sealed proper. There are still a couple of sections I need to hand brush to bring up to spec.

I'll take some lit shots once I have connected the remaining fiber optics.
