Title: 1/350 Refit Mounting Pole
Post by: TK Iain on September 14, 2018, 07:31:06 am
Hi all.

Although my own foray into the build that is the 1/350 refit is at least 6 months away I have just about everything I need with the exception of the Aztec masks which I will get from Gerry/HDA when he has his new store up and running. One major item I am missing is the mounting rod/pole and I really want to get the one everyone seems to use which (to me) is the one on the Orbital Drydock site but there never seems to be any in stock and the one on the Trek Modeller (is that another Boyd site) only has two circuits so any pointers/ideas or even ones you have to sell on would be appreciated folks.

Thanks

It really looks to be the plug that would he hardest bit to find.  That one threads onto a regular piece of All Thread, then the brass just slides over the all thread and butts up to the bottom the connector making it pretty.   The silver part that threads to the all thread may be a custom made aluminum adapter that they stick in an off the shelf 8pin connector inside.  Amphenol makes connectors similar to that, but the ones I have seen are typically very military looking, not silver and smooth and more like consumer or business grade, they may make those too though.  I had figured on someday using the Amphenol plugs that I have in a similar fashion.

If they contain a custom machined part for the plug, it is likely that they need to order so many at a time to keep costs down, and there probably isn't enough demand that they will likely get their investment back very quickly.  Also even if the plug doesn't contain a custom part, they may need a minimum order for the plugs to make it worthwhile.  I wouldn't see why beyond the plug it would be difficult for them to get one together, the reset is pretty standard hardware.  Maybe they just sell out as fast as they come in too..

You could email them and see if they can give an idea if you ordered one, what it would be until they likely could provide it.

i purchased cheap microphones jacks from china and have been very disappointed with the quality, what i am going to do from now on is use 1/2 copper tube for the pole and then use a 1/2 copper male adapter, cut the threads off and epoxy it into the model from the inside, you can get these items out of the plumbing section of any hardware store. then in my base have the wires go to a screw terminal so the base and model can be seperated easly. copper tube and fittings fit very securely togather. the disassembly wont be as simple as using microphone jacks but i believe it will stand the test of time 10 times  better.
