1/125 SCALE U-BOAT WRECK MKII.
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:32:01 am »
This is a MKII version of a original sunken version I did. This one was for a commision build but the client faffed around with payment so I told him to...er...go away, shall we say.

It is 1/125 scale around 20 inches long. I use a fine scree mix and then it is AB and weathered using acrylics, enamels and oil paints, all finished off with various rust pigments.

Final additions are a hardwood varnished plinth and a brass plaque.

The plaque reads:

U-BOAT POEM

INTO THE DEPTHS WE VALIANTLY GO,
DOWNWARDS INTO THE INKY GLOOM.

TOUCHING BOTTOM WE COME TO REST,
TO SLEEP FOREVER IN OUR IRON TOMB.

That is outstanding work! It really look like what you would expect to find lying on the bottom of the Atlantic somewhere.

Nice work! Totally reminds me of a Robert R. McCammon novel that terrified me when I read it as a youth.

LOL, I have the same book and have read it many times. Maybe, subconsciously, reading it gave me the idea to do this model.

Glad you like it, thanks for that.

That looks really cool! I like how you did the rust-bottom of the ocean look. This is difficult to realistically pull off and you nailed it! Great job.

Thank you, I like rusty things and playing around with various techniques, some work, most don't lol.

Pleased that you enjoyed looking at my sunken sub.

That is one of the coolest models I've seen, absolutely beautiful work. The poem is a great addition, very moving.

I myself have been bitten by the model sub bug and am currently building a 1.350 Kursk, I played with the idea of doing something similar to what you have done here, I seriously doubt I have the skill you have shown to pull it off though. Will probably just do some faded paint work and rust streaks lol.

I love the idea of submarines but they don't half scare me, very much doubt I could even step on board - very claustrophobic.

Tell me about it, even modern subs scare me. My great-grandfather was sunk twice in WW1 and if that wasn't enough he volunteered to go on subs! I think you just got to be...well mad.

Kursk is a nice model, you are doing the right thing anyway as it would not be down long enough to look like mine. Sounds good.

Glad you like my rust bucket.

Almost sad to see such a vessel in this condition, but you sure did nail it! Damn fine work.
Just think of what my life might be.....   In a world like I have seen!

I agree, but I do enjoy doing wrecks. Thanks for the great comment, pleased you think I managed to pull this off.
