Eyesight
« on: June 05, 2017, 03:19:36 pm »
I was recently diagnosed with diabetes.  At first my eye vision changed, but for the better.  It got to the point I couldn't wear my contacts anymore because everything was a blur, but without them I was able to see better than I had in decades.

Then my vision started to change again.  Some days it would be okay at best, other days it looked like I was in a really thick dense fog.  Now it at the point I can barely read a computer screen, and doing detail work on models is almost impossible.  I have an appointment with an eye specialist tomorrow so hopefully it's nothing major and they can fix this.  Wish me luck please :)

If it is something bad, I'll probably be selling all my kits and lighting parts.

Best of luck to you.  Type I or Type II?  Either way, your best bet is to keep tight control of your levels to avoid complications - which unfortunately include eye-sight.

Cheers!

Really sorry to hear the news. Hopefully the eye problem will be minor and unrelated. I have diabetes in the family so I'm prone to this myself. Best of luck!

You have my best wishes on tackling and taking care of the issues you mentioned.

It was just this past April when you joined this community and dove right back into the hobby.  Hopefully you can continue on with it.

Thanks everyone.  Hopefully after tomorrow they'll know what is causing this and it's something minor.  I've been trying to do detail work on my build and it's been getting harder and harder.  I believe it's a pressure build up in my eyes and from what I read they can treat that if it isn't too far along.

Just saw the eye doctor, I have cataracts in both eyes.  They said they can do surgery, has anyone gone through this?

Not been through that, but i'm also a diabetic (type 2) with issues in both eyes, tight control is the best thing for it, but it can take a while for things to settle, my body is still used to fairly high levels and if i behave and keep my levels virtually normal my eyesight is worse, it is gradually getting better but, it can be frustrating, and somewhat scary. Fortunaelty the damage caused so far is fairly minor and i'm hopeiong the one course of laser surgery i had back in november 2016 will be the last i need. From what i am led to believe cataract surgery is fairly routine and the recovery is quite quick.

Best advice i can give though is ensure you keep you levels as near normal as possible it will help greatly with your recovery, slow healing is a side effect of diabetes so best to keep the sugars under control :)

When I was diagnosed back in March my level was at 438 with an A1C of 14.  Now my GI levels are consistently between 100 and 120 and my last A1C was 6.5 :)

The eye doctor said he didn't see any signs of diabetic eye damage so that's good.  The cataracts came on quick though, my vision started going down hill the past month and a half.  I know what you mean about your eye sight changing.  When my sugar levels were high I could actually see pretty good, in fact I had to stop wearing my contacts.  Then a month and a half or so ago it started to change again and that's when it got worse.  In the past couple weeks it got to the point that when I am outside it looks like I am in a dense fog.

My first surgery is tomorrow for my left eye and they will do my right eye at the end of the month.  I can't wait, I lost all vison in my left eye and all I can see out of it is a white blur and some colors, can't make out any shapes.  My right eye lost around 50% vison.

Hopefully tomorrow I wll be able to see again out of my left eye :)  Then I can go back to work and also start working on models again!

How did it go? I know someone who had this surgery and it is so much better than it used to be.

Thanks all :)

It went well.  I just wish the wait for my right eye isn't as long as it will be.  I thought it would be done at the end of the month but now it sounds like that is an appointment to schedule the surgery.  The surgery was a breeze, took all of 15 minutes.
