Just a suggestion here Iain, and it may be moot with the pace you're moving at. A while back I picked up the Tamiya Handy Drill, which is battery powered and perfect for drilling small holes in plastic. It burrows at a speed which doesn't melt the plastic like a Dremel does. The only issue was the two static sized chucks it comes with would not hold the smaller bits below about 0.7mm. So I found an adjustable chuck that fits the larger static sized chuck, and it will take even the smallest of those tiny wire bits. Hers are the links on Amazon's UK site, though I got mine off the US site. Since you have another SD in your stash, perhaps for a fututre build.

Thanks.

I have been looking at that Tamiya drill for a while now and the other chuck would be ideal.

I feel your pain with the blisters Iain, keep looking at my ISD and then walk away!!

I'm going the 0.25mm route with the fibre guides as I have found some multi strand F/O with 16 and 64 strands with a PVC outer sheath, makes connecting it to an LED very easy.

Great work so far, the build part looks like it will be fairly quick but the drilling and fitting of fibres then painting may take some time.

Enjoy the decorating, and the jelly & ice cream!!

Thanks guys!

Dan - you're right as there really is'nt anything complicated in the actual build but the hole drilling is a patience tester to be sure.

Me again! :D

Got some more work done on the ISD and at this moment we are looking at 26 drill bits, four burst blisters (Damn they hurt!), 17 hrs work and around 400 wee holes drilled. I should have kept my mouth shut as drill bits have been breaking with annoying regularity. So much so I have ordered another 50 so hopefully 100 should see me through this build.

Been thinking ahead a bit and just figuring out where the leds/smds are going to so out with the sharpy pen we went (and this is just the lower hull).

I will also have to order up some more bright white 0805 smds for the hangar bays as the 20 I have are going to be 2 short for this build but I could get away with it and besides those smd's are always handy to have in the inventory.

My right hand is a mess of burst blisters and I am going to have to leave the build for a few days so I can get back to feeling all my fingers. And besides I only have x4 0.5mm drill bits left.  Here's where we are so far.

Kind of hard to see al the holes but believe they are there. Not much else I can do to the main hull until the spare drill bits arrive so I will start work on the engines next.

I hope you like what you see so far. ^,^

Ah the joy of drilling...I remember it so fondly!

Excellent work so far - I'd love one of these in the stash but divorce proceedings might follow the purchase!! I'm gonna stick with the smaller scale and get me the aftermarket bits n bobs over several pay days instead I think!

I'll be keeping an eye on this for reference tho!

Cheers

OH another note: Your bits and fiber are both .5MM correct? Are you going to fiber first then paint, then cut off the fiber ends? Reason i ask is on mine, i wanted the best look for the fiber, and mushroomed all of my fiber before sticking them in. I didn't want the fibers to be cut off after painting. I had also painted the bridge on mine first. Found out i had to go back and "re-drill" the holes for the fiber after paint because the holes had shrunk from the painting process (duh)! :o Luckily i caught it then before having done the whole ship. I switched to a .6MM bit, and was able to paint the whole model first, then stick the fibers in. Just something to think about.  ;)

Thanks Guys!

Raven - I had never actually thought of that TBH as I have always cut the fibers after the model has been completed.

Will most certainly consider your idea. :)

This is definitely the Star Destroyer kit of all kits.  Can you show a bit of the inside with all the FO work?
