Why no molded Aztec Plating Kits
« on: July 29, 2017, 08:42:24 pm »
I know a lot of people hate the 537 1701 Refit kit with the 'brick hull' pattern.  Why haven't they made a kit that instead of the 'brick' pattern, rather have the Aztec pattern engraved in the hull?

The brick pattern was not a good idea, and very inaccurate.

Unfortunately  it ruined  the smoothie 1/537 molds so it could not be fixed.

Ideally the Aztec pattern should not have relief, so newer kits like the 1/1000 and  1/350 are smooth and modellers add the pattern with paint or decals

I think if they made it with light etch lines and not nearly as deep and heavy as the brick pattern it would look fine.

True, and ERTL did that for the 1701 D model when TNG came out.

Yes sir you are right!  I never noticed that before.  After you posted that I grabbed my 1701D saucer and low and behold yepper, it has the Aztec pattern!  I never noticed that before, it's subtle but there.  It will take a lot of work with Liquid mask, but when I get around to finishing my D I'm going to use the pattern on the kit instead of decaling it with the wallpaper decals.

Now if they did a 1701 Refit like that...  :)
