Moebius 1/32 scale BSG TOS Viper
« on: July 30, 2017, 04:42:27 pm »
Just thought I would post some pics of my finished Battlestar Galactica 1/32 scale Viper I did for the Model Shop Spring Group Build I just finished last week. A little past the June 2nd 'deadline', but it was a soft deadline. The kit is a great kit, and the Paragrafix photoetch cockpit add ons make all the difference if you're lighting it, as well as the engine baffles inserts. I used the Aztek Dummy paint masks for the canopy and the red markings. The canopy worked really well, but I had some issues with the wing masks sticking and paint bleed. But at the end I like how it came out. To light the cockpit I used 3-SMD 0805 warm white tape strip for each side of the cockpit and one strip mounted on a triangle shaped frame just in front of the cockpit tub for the front instruments. For the engines I used three 5mm flashing blue LEDs. Both the LEDs and tape strip were purchased from Jerry at HDA Modelworx. Thanks Jerry! So, enough of me prattling on. Hope you like the photos. Forgive the amateur nature, I don't have a proper 'studio' setup.

Drat! Didn't even see that huge light leak behind the cockpit along the intake housing until posting this. Where's my Vallejo putty and a Q-tip?!

Dan, this is just BEAUTIFUL!

Love the light job, weathering and the detail on the Engines!

I hope to add this one to my stash assuming it doesn't go out of production before I can get it!

Again, very well done! You have set the standard, Sir!

Most kind, Steve. Thank you very much. It was a fun build and I got to try out a couple of new things.

Thanks starsiege! I wanted to pay a small homage to the late actor who was the original Apollo. And Jerry at HDA did a fantastic job with the decals.

Very nice work on this one all around Dan....  I always preferred this Viper over the newer MKVII and you did great work representing her!
Just think of what my life might be.....   In a world like I have seen!

Thanks Wolf! I agree, I prefer the old version to the re-boot one too. That actually goes for all the original craft. Moebius did a nice job of updating the kit and enhancing the detail on it. And getting rid of that comical javelin projectile shooting out from the nose cone. ::)

That looks great. I have a Viper Mk VII on deck to build. Primed and working on the pilot right now.

Thanks Dave. I intend to pick up one of the MK VII re-boot kits sometime soon.

Thanks Iain. And please pinch away. It's only fair. Who do you think I pinched the idea from for the cockpit decals. ;D

You did a fantastic job... and I didn't see a light leak, it must be a small one.
I remember when I had my first house and I stayed up all night putting faux brick up around the fireplace to surprise my wife.  The next morning she came down and the kitchen was painted the color she wanted, and the fireplace in the dining area was all bricked.  She went on and on about how great it looked and I went on and on about every teeny tiny mistake.  She looked at me and said, "It looks great, and besides, if you hadn't pointed everything out I wouldn't have even noticed.'

Moral is, we are always our own worse critic.  That is one nice looking Viper!

Personally I always liked the Viper more than the X-Wing, don't know why.  Maybe it's because it looks like pure raw badass power! :)

Ok now that you pointed it out I do see it but that should be a really easy fix :)
