1/537 TOS Era Destroyer
« on: August 28, 2017, 05:54:48 pm »
Found a very badly put together model of the 22" cutaway Enterprise model given to me by a friend a few years ago. Decided it was sad and needed a new life.
Introducing the USS Nipigon. NCC-266. Named after the Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Nipigon which my uncle served on before it was decommissioned.
Basically my take on the quirky Franz Joseph Saladin Scout/Destroyer class.

So much sanding and filling... Ok. This is kind of my fault. When my friend gave this to me we thought about adding battle damage to it. So we used a lighter... This was dumb. So I got to fill and file down this horrific mistake.

Decided it needed a shuttle bay. Thought this was as good a location as any.

Finally... after an entire weekend of filling and sanding and priming. Still more modifications to come. I will be adding a mission/weapons pod behind the bridge similar to that of the Nebula class.

So... I'm really not a fan of the original TOS studio model's lack of hull detail. I like the aztec pattern on later ships. So I decided this vessel would have one of it's own. This masking pattern I designed using Corel Draw and will (hopefully) print out using the vinyl machine at my workplace. I've never done this before so it will be very interesting to see how it works out.

Will definitely add character to it!!

Very intriguing! I like the addition of the top of the old secondary hull/shuttlebay to the saucer. One question about the aztecs. Did you take into account the shape of the aforementioned secondary hull hump on the pie wedges, or do you plan on just trimming them where the hump is? Just wondering.

I did not take the addition of the shuttle bay into account when I created the pattern. But even so I'll just trim the the masks as needed.

Got my aztec mask run today. Applied to top of saucer section tonight. I think it's a pretty nice pattern.

There will be more than 2 colours used for this pattern.

Pretty happy with the results of my aztec mask. Still adjustments to be made. But we're getting there.

Added the classic rust ring similar to what is on the original Enterprise. Thought it would be a nice touch.

Nearly completed painting the underside of the saucer section. A couple minor issues with paint peeling from masks and inability to match the overall colour with the top of the saucer. Still, things are moving along nicely. The rings were tricky, but came out well enough.

Well done, LFS!

The aztecing, like everyone is saying, is looking very good!

Keep at it!
