Some general questions about Future with other clear coats ...
« on: October 17, 2017, 09:20:42 am »
Hey everyone,

I have some questions about using Future and clear coats, and some more general questions.

For my current build, I plan on sandwiching my decals between a few coats of Future. My main question is, what kind of dull coats can go over top of
that? I know Future is basically acrylic, so should I stick with some kind of acrylic based clear? Will a lacquer like Testor's Dullcote cause interference?

If I should stick with an acrylic clear, do you have any suggestions? I have a bottle of Model Masters Acryl flat.

More generally, I've been told that you can put just about anything over cured enamel, you should avoid putting enamel over lacquer and should only put acrylic
over acrylic. Tamiya acrylics are an exception because they really use alcohols as a solvent. I've put Glosscote and Dullcote over Tamiya without issue.

Is any of this correct? I would love to hear from those who have some more experience with all this ...

Cheers,
Spencer

I've used Krylon Clears over future with out any problems. Don't use an alcohol based it will dissolve the future.
I've been using Valspar clears lately with no problems they are lacquer based. The alclads are also good.
Rustoleums will make the future bubble and blister. Just keep in mind if using an acrylic as a final coat
don't display the model in a high humidity area. It will make your finish tacky to the touch.

Thanks Tankton.

I've been reluctant to using lacquers because of the smell and other things, although I have thought about using Alcad for a War Machine kit I have stashed away.
I read on another forum Dullcote will work, so long as you spray in light coats and the Future is COMPLETELY dry.

I do have easy (or easier) access to Krylon Clears, so I might consider that ...

My 1:350 TOS replacement smooth saucers arrived today, so I can use the old ones to test out what works and what doesn't.

If anyone else wants to add their two cents, please feel free ...

Here's what I have right now and will have some time tomorrow to go to my local Michael's and take a look-see.

I'll be testing both, and maybe more, over the next couple weeks while I wait for my enamel coats to dry ...

The Krylon Matte finish is what I used. I can't get it locally anymore.
That is why I switched to the Valspar. That works great over future
do light coats.

The matte finish I have has been lying around from another project, unrelated to modeling.

Reading in other places, the Acryl Clears seem to be pretty good. Some also claim to have used a fairly precise mixture
of 70% Future and 30% Tamiya X-21 Flat.

I'll see what Michael's and the newly opened Hobby Lobby (yay!) have. Both still an hour drive away. >:(

I wish they were only an hour away for me. More like four hours for me.
