Hey Everyone,

Been a while since an update, and not much actual build progress to report. I've been reading up on Vallejo paints a bit more and doing some test spraying.
I've also been fiddling with the color scheme a bit more and testing my circuit board(s).

I've also been experimenting with a DIY wet palette since I'll be brushing some of the detail colors with Model Color.

Another time sink is that I now have (limited) access to a Silhouette Cameo 3 cutter and I am trying to figure out if
it's worth trying to make my own vinyl paint masks.

So, it'll be a few days before I get back to it ...

Cheers,
Spencer

Hello everyone,

This is what has been preoccupying me for the past few days ...

No, there's nothing wrong with your monitor, there are two sets of disruptors there.

User MiniMadnessR53 asked if I could rebuild his set (the black ones), and I think they turned out quite nice.
But, unfortunately, for the sake of my fingers and wanting to get back to my build, it'll be some
time before I consider doing any of that again ...

Hopefully sometime this week I can get back to the build, and maybe even dust off my dual NX-01's
(I really shouldn't be making that kind of promise though  ::))

Cheers,
Spencer

WOW!!  Those guns are totally amazing.  The bar has been reset higher.  Enough that I will probably just look up at it in awe.

Thanks, I appreciate that!   :)

Some sad news I'm afraid ...

My grandfather has passed away. It was not unexpected I will say, but it was still tough.
It's become my folks (and to some degree my) responsibility to settle all his affairs,
like cleaning/fixing up his house, property, care costs, and many other things. That's taking
up most of our time.

I'll still plan on working on the BOP for the next couple weeks, just on and off, mainly because
I find it's a good time to be with my own thoughts and deflate.

Until then,
Spencer

Sorry for your loss, Spencer.

Take your time and we'll be here.

My sympathies.

Spencer, there is of course a gulf of difference between 'not unexpected' and it actually happening.  My condolences.

Sorry to hear of your loss Spencer. One of the advantages of this hobby is it allows some 'alone' time to decompress and get away from real life for a bit. Unexpected or not, it is a life changing experience and needs time to be processed. Take care and do what's needed.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I'm back and will hopefully be starting work on the BOP this weekend.

I bought a couple DC-DC buck converters that I might use instead of my linear regulator board. It will depend
on how much current the model ends up drawing. Regardless of which, the board will go into the base.

Buck converter above, my regulator board below ...

I still have to drill out the rest of the window ports and running lights, then I'll probably go ahead and put a primer coat
on everything.

Rather than try to cut vinyl masks on this build, I'll just use Tamiya tape and a sharp hobby blade to make masks for the
accent panels.

Welcome back!

Okay, Spencer, you MUST tell me how you change the thread title to what you are doing! I haven't figured that out.

Thanks Yoda!

Also, where did you get your linear boards? Did you have to design them or are they stock boards from some place?

Keep moving forward!

Hi Steve, if you go to the very first post on a thread and change its title, it will update on the forum list (but all previous posts themselves will keep their original titles ...).

I designed the linear board myself, in a similar vein to one I designed for breadboard use (below).

I think I can make the pcb design public on OSHPark if you want.

Here's my first attempt at cutting vinyl.

Like I said earlier, I won't be using it for masking on the BOP (too intricate for me right now), but
it does give me some ideas for the base ...

Spencer

P.S. for those interested, I'm using a Silhouette Cameo 3 and their brand of Matte Vinyl, though I plan on buying some of this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JZ1VFD6
It's my friend's cutter, but I can use it so long as I buy the vinyl.

That looks AWESOME, Spencer!

And, what a friend! (Gotta get me some of those!)

Keep going! Can't wait to see the paint job!

Thanks Steve. The cutter is actually my friend's fiancee's, but we're neighbors and so we
share/borrow things from time to time.

It can supposedly cut thin sheet styrene and decal film too.
If it keeps cutting vinyl this well, I'll probably buy one when I save up some cash.

I was going to work on the BOP this past weekend, but the weather was too darn nice to not
be outside ... but I'll be back to building soon ... good priming weather!

This is a fun build to watch - and I'm totally going to steal a bunch of these ideas when I start this kit!  Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing your build.  I totally appreciate the paint list too.  I'm really bad at picking colors out - so this helps me oodles.

Cheers!

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the lack or posts/progress. I sprained two of my right fingers pretty bad a couple weeks ago and they're
still a bit stiff, but I've been itching to get back to work on the BOP.

In the meantime. I've been thinking about the base. Right now, it'll be a simple hollow wooden one,
probably with a darker stain.

Two "angel eye" push buttons will control power to the model (yellow) and weapons firing (red).
In the back will be a lighted rocker switch to indicate power to the base and a DC jack for 9V.

I'm not sure yet whether to cut vinyl to simply lay the Klingon emblem onto the base under the support rod, or use it
as a template to paint it on. Either way, it will be black!

Cheers,
Spencer

P.S. Here's hoping SmugMug treats me (us) better than Photobucket ...
