[Bow Sander] DIY Tool For Sanding Rounded Surfaces
« on: May 31, 2018, 11:28:45 am »
Hi, Everyone!

When sanding rounded surfaces to get rid of seam lines, it can lead one to mistakenly shape the surface into a more flat one.  This can happen if you sand by hand or with a sanding block / stick.

Bow sanders, however, can be used to sand surfaces while being able to follow rounded or curved shapes.

There are bow sander products out there for model builders, namely Flex-I-File (with their anodized aluminum frames and abrasive tape) and stepSander (with their plastic "springboard" bow sander tool).  But after looking at those, you start to realize that you can probably make a similar tool for yourself out of things you already have in your model building arsenal.  This was shown in a YouTube video back in 2011 by Doctor Faust's Painting Clinic.

So here's what I did:

  • Take a brass tube and cut about 1.5 inches to 2 inches in order to make it more manageable.
  • Make the tube into a U-shape using a spring tube bender.
  • Cut a strip of sand paper to fit between the prongs of the U-shaped tube.
  • Use CA glue to secure loops made at the ends of the sand paper strip.
  • Slide the sand paper strip loops around the prongs of the U-shaped tube.

Done!  And it works quite well!

You can hold the tool along the prongs or at the sand paper strip loop areas for greater control.

You can make different sand paper strips of various grit and just slide them in and out of the tool as needed.  You can also make the tube (or rod) to whatever size you want.

Here is the Doctor Faust's Painting Clinic YouTube video on making the tool: https://youtu.be/PAoh1ikUIPw

Here are links to Flex-I-File and stepSander if you're interested in their products...

Haha so obvious.

Thanks! I must try this some time. Super glue should do the trick.

Thanks, Gadge, very helpful.  Wasn't aware of the StepSander product and may give that a try too.

thats a cool idea .Here is another one.
I saw this one  on youtube  a fellow made abattery operated  sander

1 5$ battery operated toothbrush  ,sanded the bristles off

bought some peel and stick  sanding disks the kind for the  belt /disk sander combo  EG  http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-belt-disc-sander-4-x-36-in-0553559p.html#srp.

Filed a  small  diameter pipe  the size of the disks he wanted  and punched them out  for the peel and stick disk and placed them on the toothbrush  which is oscillating.

i'm sure there are plenty of places you can buy  the sanding disks  from   i bought my belts for the  tool i  listed  as i own one

they  have alot of grits . just  throwing that idea out there for   for everyone
