1/72 Vader's Tie Fighter comparison?
« on: August 29, 2018, 09:53:01 pm »
Hey everyone,

I've heard the news that Revell of Germany is re-releasing the Fine Molds 1/72 Vader TIE fighter as part of their Master Series.

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/1161109-revell-06881-darth-vader-s-tie-fighter

I have the Bandai 1/72 kit and I was wondering how the two compare. Anyone out there who owns both the Bandai
and older Fine Molds kit that can chime in?

Here is a comparison video on YouTube:

Huh!

I am unnerved by how there seems to be a real size difference for something that is supposed to be 1:72 scale. :(
I have the FineMolds Tie fighter kit, though I have the Bandai's Tie Advanced. :)

Thanks for providing the video link! That pretty much answers the questions I had.

Indeed. The differences in size are a bit more than you would expect.

If you want a 1/48 regular TIE, it's kinda hard to go wrong with Fine Molds, but I now think Bandai has the better advanced TIE.

I would prefer to have the rear triangular cockpit detail on Bandai's version to be a separate piece though. Would make it possible to light those red slits
like you can do with photoetch on the 1/48 regular TIE.

I was stunned at the Bandai/Fine Molds size difference for the TIE fighter.  It's like, did you use a different measuring stick?

Overall I find the Bandai kits have better detail, but for the right price I would not turn either of them down.

I never acquired the 1/72 Fine Molds X-1, but the Bandai kit is quite nice.

Given what I've seen between Fine Molds and Bandai, I suspect part of the size difference is that Bandai based their scaling on the set piece of the cockpit interior, and Fine Molds used some other method to determine what the starting size was.
