My UFO Mystery Ship, AKA Leif Erickson, AKA Soap Bottle
« on: October 24, 2018, 02:51:19 pm »
Hi All,

I am still working on my Reliant, but in the middle of all that I started a new model.  I have done several modifications on it.

I drilled out these little scoop things and made some boxes for some ratheon lighting.

I dug out the small engine things (4 per side), and the bulk heads just inboard of them on the very back.  I think those turned out pretty nice.  I'm lighting all that but have no pictures as yet.

I bore though the front of the ship and installed green lighthouse LED's.  This will contrast the Blue LED's of the windows.

I also Epoxied in a mounting rod.

I think things are coming together nicely.
Thanks for looking.

The ratheon lighting looks great.  Did you have any problems with the effect and the glow-in-the-dark plastic?

Hi TShark,

Actually, I think the glow in the dark plastic might even help the effect.   Although I have to say that the raytheon  effect was an after thought.  To block the glow of the model I had to really coat the model to death with primer so I ended up scraping a ton of the primer off to make the raytheon effect happen.  I should really think these things through before starting.

Anyway, thanks for looking,
Shawn

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this build.  I did one a few years ago before getting the lighting bug.  This kit begs for some detail, though glow in the dark plastic requires a lot of work.

Looking good Shawn....   Nice thing about these kits is that nothing is documented or "carved in stone" about the actual ship, so you can make all the modifications you like.  :b

I really like seeing people's take on this Jefferies design.

Thanks guys,

I know what you mean about not being carved in stone and the design.  Really leaves it open to a lot of possibilities.

Love the lighting effects, Shawn!

You have returned to model building with a vengence! I like that - it reminds me of me! ;)

Keep at it! Full speed ahead!

Thank you Steve.  I'm getting close on Reliant too.  Those decal wedges seem to be taking about an hour a piece to really get right since they have to be baby sat.

How is your Enterprise C coming along?  Getting closer?

Shawn, stay strong! The results with the decals, I'm sure, will be worth it!

The C was starting to pick up steam; I have a game plan. But apparently in trying to catch a closing door, I got a "boxer's fracture" in my left hand that will require surgery.

Sooooooo......I may not be able to make any headway on it for another while.

Rather than hyjack your thread, I'll say more in the C's thread.

Thanks for asking, though!

Hi all,

I thought I would share some progress on my UFO Mystery ship.

I cut out the back panels and put in some bulbs that change color.  Unfortunately they start off with one color, but quickly go out of sync.  That's really ashamed, but just the way it goes.  Maybe this ship is supposed to do that?

I'm trying to make some engine lights so on each side of the hull are two flickering red bulbs pointing towards the back, and one green bulb pointing to the front.  I wanted these to fade in from the impulse engines that I made on the back of the ship.  Ralph at Tenacontrols rewired a 1701 board so that I could put on as many bulbs as I wanted to make this process happen.

I installed the cargo bay and was ready to glue the ship together.

That's about it for now.  It's on it's base and wired up.  I'm attaching the engine covers and all that.  I'll post more another time.

Thanks for looking.

It really does.  I have trouble making Seams disappear.  Probably just need to watch some videos on the subject.   I just got done gluing the starboard engine covers together and to the ship.  The seam is going to have massive light leaks just like on the Port side.   It's good practice trying to fix these things I suppose.

That's looking really good. What are you going to use to fill in the windows? I have a Colonial One with about 100 windows to fill and I'm waffling on how best to do it (Micro Krystal Clear and a clear resin are right now the main contenders).
