1/350 Refit Base Colour Question
« on: November 13, 2018, 03:24:13 am »
Howdy all!

Although my own refit build is about 6 months away or at least until I finish my MLEV I have just about everything I need with just one exception and that is the white base colour so just putting it out there to see what the rest of you have used so I can start having a look at how much I am going to need and what cost options there are.

Thanks in advance for any reply and ideas.

That's a great question.  Do you mean a basecoat on the model to prepare it for the final color?  I'd kinda like to know that as well.

Thanks Merrittk.

I mean the final colour once the kit has been primed and prior to the azteking - for some reason I am assuming it will be Tamiya Flat White but those only come in 10ml (think it's 10ml) jars so something the size of a 1/350 kit is going to use up 10+ at least of those wee jars or that's my thinking anyway.

I used Tamiya Fine White primer in the 180ml spray cans for both primer and finish coats. I think I went through 2 cans.

That's an idea Crow!

Not much room for error with a spray can but certainly an option for me to look at. I could always get a can and practice on the lower hull section that won't be used.

The Tamiya rattle can primers go on very smooth. Definitely worth checking out at least.

Thanks Dave - will definitely give them a lot of consideration nearer build time. Just worried of overspray or "blobby" paint so will need to take my time and be careful.

I may use the white as the base coat for the top section of my Colonial One. I'm going to do a test between that and the Tamiya flat white in the jar through an airbrush and see which I prefer. I have issues with airbrush blobbiness from time to time so we'll see.

As I recall Iain, Boyd used to mix and sell custom paints for kits in exact quantities for that particular build....  Something you might also want to ask about?
Just think of what my life might be.....   In a world like I have seen!

The aerosol Tamiya primer sprays very nicely, but even if you do end up with blobby rough spots you can sand & polish them out. This stuff took all the drama out of getting a good base color. There will be plenty of drama with the aztecs!

As an alternative to the Tamiya spray cans Alclad do a white primer that you use with an airbrush.

Unfortunately those paints (don't know if Boyd does them anymore TBH) cannot be imported into the UK.
