Important News About Changes Coming To The SFMA Forum in 2019
« on: November 28, 2018, 01:00:36 pm »
Hello to all of the members of the SFMA boards.

I want to share with you some important news about some changes that will happen to
this forum in the coming year of 2019. I have decided to close down these boards in their current format.
Unfortunately they have have become fairly out of date and due to the structure of the operating template,
there isn't anything that can be done to improve functionality or to support more modern tools for our members here
such as video uploading etc. Combined with the ever rising costs to continue operating an outdated system brings me
to conclude that it's time for a change. I'm currently in the process of building a new website that will be much more
secure, efficient and reliable. It will also have improved functionality and many added tools for our members to use.

Also, SFMA will become part of the overall community I've been operating called "The Model Shop" The new site will
be focused on most of the popular modeling genres such as automotive, military, figures etc and will not be aimed solely at Scifi subjects only although that category will continue to be quite popular there I'm sure.
All of the modeling subjects will have separate categories which users can easily navigate to.

To keep the operating costs down on my end, I'm looking at a possible two tier membership system on the new site.
The basic tier will include all of the usual functions that our members are used to having on this forum. That is the ability
to upload build threads and basic pictures and use the messaging system. The basic tier will remain free of charge for all members to use. The second tier will include extras, like uploadingvideos in an HD format, viewing videos and probably a video conference room available 24/7 for members wanting to video chat while building etc.

To use the second tier system there will be a small monthly fee, most likely $5.00 dollars a month or less.
I'm hoping to keep that as low as possible and yet cover the operating costs to make it work. I think in the end it will be a pretty good bargain for what we'll have there.

I should have the new site ready in the early months of the new year, 2019. I understand that there are ongoing build threads here being followed and so I want to allow time for those to be completed before the change. I'm hoping that I can transfer everything
over to the new site as an archive but I cannot guarantee that it will be fully successful. On that note with the time remaining, I suggest that any pictures of the models here that members want to save should be downloaded on your own and kept that way
as they will be permanently lost in the transfer if something goes wrong.
Also, please help spread the word by directing other members to this thread while your commenting. Not everyone will see this topic and may miss it entirely.
Also, please help to spread the word about this topic while you are commenting. Direct other members to this thread as not everyone will see the notices.

In closing I just want to say a big thanks to all of the members here for joining in the first place and for your continued activity and support of the community. Rest assured we are not going away but simply changing our address and they way we look just a bit.
I look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have regarding the change and lets all work to help make it as smooth as possible. More updates in the coming weeks.

If It's a model kit, I like it already.

Thanks for the advance warning Boyd.....  Please be sure to post the new site address here as soon as you have that available....

Do you know of an easy way to archive any existing build thread pages that someone might want to keep on there own machine?

Just think of what my life might be.....   In a world like I have seen!

Thanks, Boyd for the updates.

I have been on here a while, not a long as others, but I consider this site my modelbuilding "home" so I am a bit down that it will be changing. On the other hand, I look forward to seeing what the new format will do and see how it will bring the larger community together.

While here in this thread, you have the Google+ community sites going "The Model Shop" and "SciFiModelAction" and they seem to be going strong.

Thanks again for all you do for us!

Happy modeling!

thanks for pointing me here Steve and thanks for the update Boyd. The update sounds like it's needed - although I personally don't find there's anything wrong with the current format. Are you going to go the way of Brit Modeller, ARC etc in their formatting or something else entirely? I like the little things like you can preview posts without opening them and so on.
Are you going to keep the dark gray colour scheme and interchangeable ships on the banner? I feel it really adds to the sci-fi feeling of this site.

This move to join with The Model Shop (who I'd never heard of until now) could be a good way to bring in some new eyes and talent.
Do you have a date in mind for the move? I have no idea on how to back up my posts, but do I need to know or is there a good chance my content won't vanish?

Thanks for entertaining me

Can the fee be paid in one go Boyd and what format can it be paid in for us not in the USA (Paypal?).

A $5.00 p/mth fee works out at about 48GBP for us on the other side of the big pond which is pretty reasonable I reckon.

Better make sure all my builds/pictures are saved before the "BIG" move. ;D

I've heard Google+ will soon be kaput too. I haven't posted on the SFMA group for a long time because the stupid platform counts all of my posts with links to my Tumblr modeling feed as "spam" and I'm unable to share my photosets. I'm sick of G+ and there's no way I will ever get a Facebook account. I rather prefer these forums, as "outdated" as they may be, because I can trust Boyd with my information far greater than these clowns who are constantly hauled before congress for jacking over their users.

I'm sad to see this forum going away. I've recently lost the Scale Model Addict forum too. There's not a lot on SFMA outside of the American SF subject modeling paradigm, but I've still enjoyed this site for what it is. But I understand about costs and all that.

Count me in on the new change. I will follow this forum no matter what format it takes. I would be willing to pay for more features.

Just saw the update today. It'll miss the old format but one should change with the times. It seems like the free format will be pretty much what we've been used to.The paid version looks like something for those who want it.It'll be neat to have an all encompassing forum for the multiple modeling interests for our members;it sounds exciting! I've been with the forums since the beginning(2012) Those of us starting members saw many changes since the early days. We've watched the forum and the members grow over the past six years.Thank you Boyd for hosting the site and wish you and the site the best in the upcoming years.
