Abteilung 502 Oils
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:01:47 am »
Hey everyone,

I'm going to try some oil washes on my current build, and I've seen some folks using the Abteilung 502 Oils.

I can get them for about $6.00 US per tube online without shipping, but I was wondering if there are any advantages to these over going to Hobby Lobby and picking up some basic artist oils.

Does anyone know if there's something special about these? Do you have to use their own brand of thinners? Etc.

My understanding is the Abteilung lines are formulated specifically to be used as washes and weathering on scale models, with consistently finer particles of pigment involved. Standard artist oils may work, but the formulations are intended for, well, painting, so some colors may not work as well as others even in the same brand.

The professional modelers and prop makers I've been watching on YouTube (including Adam Savage) seem to prefer using the Abteilung as a weathering medium.

I once bought an artist tube of oil paint and attempted to use it as a wash, but it sort of looked like the stuff was not fine powdered, so it looks bad.

I will check out this Abteilung 502 oil. I wish I knew what ideal thinner liquid would be.
