1/350 NX-01 Base Colour?
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:09:29 am »
Hi everyone,
I have just ordered the Aztek Decals from starshipmodeler.com for this model but I don't know what paint and what shade I should use as the base colour so I don't lose that detail from the decals!?!

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Jamie :)

I was going to say natural metal colour....I know, not very specific.

Dedicated work space for yourself is excellent!!  Hoping you will do a build log on this ship!
Ooooooo!  I think I may buy that kit!

I am deffo doing a build log as there is pretty much nothing on the net about building this massive NX-01, apart from Steve Neill's log and a few finished product vids (to my knowledge anyway)
Ill drop Mr Neill an email see what light he can shed on the subject perhaps!
Thanks for the interest i shall keep digging and post what I find

In addition what size pole are people generally using to stand their models on to run the main power lead through ect and how have you been attatching said stand to the model intself?  I have seen alot of brass being used, do people just go to the plummbing department?

;-)

So I emailed Mr Steve Niell (YT=darkuboot) and he got back to me with a lovely reply even with his busy schedule.

"As I recall I use aluminum, the stuff you buff. Reason being I've known
Doug Drexler for years. And we are both WW2 fans. Especially the aircraft.
B-17's P-51's many were unpainted and flight aluminum. Doug picked that
look for the NX when he designed it. It even has P-38 turbo chargers of
sorts if you look for them. Easter eggs as Doug calls them."

So there you go it is an Aluminium base colour with and with my decals that arrived the other day from starshipmodeler.com I should get it looking something like a star ship haha!!!

All the best and Happy Modeling!!!

I am looking forward to it too but ill be honest i am scared of messing it up so i will be popping out to get me one of theose 1/1000 round2 refit models as that will give me all the decal practice any modeler would want at a reasonably low price ie if i mess it up big style

Well I'd recommend a kind of Early-Jet Era Metallic Paint [From bare metal planes like the P-51 all the way up to F-86], as Doug Drexler was indeed a fan of them. I'd just think about where you'd display it and adjust the colour to fit.
The only NX-01 I have is about 5 inches long, But I do have a F-86 Saber, which i just mixed gun-metal and aluminium metalic till it looked right, and then painted some panel highlights on later with a lighter mix of the same base.

The lighting in the show was low, so here is the textures from a 3d model for a game, I picked this because it doesn't include lighting like most pictures on Google, hope it helps -
